9 bolt drum to disc

i have a donor car in my driveway now and have everything that i believe i need. brake lines and prop valve the whole nine. however mine is an 85 rear and the disc one i have is an 89. will there be any brake line problems???

also i was reading that the axle flange is different and i wont get the rotors on my old drum set up. is it just a matter of changing the axles over as well??

If your 85 has the cast iron proportioning valve (instead of the alum version), lines there will be SAE and the 89's combination valve will be metric. With a donor car, however, you should be able to scavenge whatever parts you should need.

The axle flange is indeed different. You'll need either to modify it or purchase the bolt-on kit from Ed Miller. IIRC, you won't have to change the axles if you use a rotor from 93-97.

Re: 9 bolt drum to disc

ok...my next question is if i buy rotors for a 95 camaro will i still need the bolt on kit or still need to modify the axle?? short on cash and wanna take the cheap route right now. will need new rotors anyway so will either changing the axles or changing to a 95 rotor. would like to change the axle if that would do the trick or maybe the rotors. if i did the axle swap i could still stick with the proper rotors tho. what do you think about that??

To accomplish what you wish to do, you'll have to modify the flanges, which is the cheap way out, or purchase the kit, which is the simple way out. One way or another, you'll either need new axles which are in the $200+ range, or the aforementioned rotors which are a whole lot less. So the cheap route is to mod the flanges and buy rotors.

Both your 85 and 89 should have 26-spline axles--double-check the 89 as some 28-spline axles apparently found their way in in that year. Should work fine (the rotor swap would be less time/labor intensive). Here's another link that might prove useful:

Re: 9 bolt drum to disc

Brain fart: All 9-bolts have 28-spline axles and also have different length axles side to side. As a consequence, they won't swap into a 10-bolt, though I assume your 89 is a 9-bolt. Also, 9-bolt axles apparently are the same for both drum and disc brakes.

Re: 9 bolt drum to disc

well both are nine bolts. are the axle flanges part of the axles or part of the rear housing? if part of the housing i may just swap the whole rear.
