700R4 - Late shifts, no fourth
Ok, have a freshly built 700, was working just fine for the first 2000 miles. Built it with a B&M transpak. Say what you will, but I've been happy and it was nowhere near harsh. Shifted just barely north of 2000 at part throttle and would hold till 5+ at full throttle, perfect for the 350 that was in it.
I got bored and built a new motor, and decided that while it was out would be a good time to drop the trans and put in a filter and some new fluid. Original fluid was Oreilly dexron junk, replaced with B&M Trick Shift. The swap took a lot longer than I anticipated, and the tranny sat for about a year. After finally getting everything back together, I drove it and it refused to shift until five grand. This was with the TV cable still in the original setting. After fiddling with the tv until there was no more adjustment and it had some visible slack at idle, it will knock of second and third at 3200. It will not go into overdrive.
My question is this, can the change in fluid alter the line pressure dramatically enough to cause the late shifting? Do I need to check out the governer? I'm really at a loss here.
Thanks,
David

Re: 700R4 - Late shifts, no fourth
sounds like the tv cable may have become detached inside the transmission or broke

Re: 700R4 - Late shifts, no fourth
As I understood it, a tv cable that was too loose would let it shift earlier? I'll get under there and take a look, but could you elaborate on that at all?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: 700R4 - Late shifts, no fourth
I had the same problem with my 89, wouldn't shift out of first untill 4000 rpm, turned out to be a bad governer.

Re: 700R4 - Late shifts, no fourth
you'll have to disconnect the tv cable at the transmission and see if it's still connected.

Ok, from what I've gathered so far, after I get off work I'm going to check the tv cable and the governer.
Thanks guys,
David

Try adjusting it first before you decide to lift the car and such.

Must have skimmed over it because it only said tv. Sorry. Does sound like you messed with your Television though if you read quick. Still picking up the abbreviated car lingo.

Ok, started ripping things apart...
TV cable fully attached and functioning. Governor opening and closing perfectly. Call made to the man who built it, and he suggested that when you tip them on their sides, the valves can sometimes just stick. Go drive it. Logged about twenty miles, and all is well.
Thanks guys,
Dave
