whats up guys and thanks in advance for any info. today as i was taking off fom a stop sign the trans stop shifting. it has first gear and reverse but thats it.what could cause this? this tranny has about 3000 miles.

 

its a crapin azz 700r4, now that you found the source of the problem, the next step is fixin it, and what do i suggest, good question, i dont know but i have been through 5 700r4 rebuilds in 40k miles

i really dont want to hack it up to put a manual in it, im really looking at the 6speed from TCI, mine broke again sooooo im looking for a solution to the problem, and building a 700 up hasnt worked yet so im at a dead end

BTW you actual problem is the band in the trans went out or the clutchs

 

check the govener gear on the side of tranny.it's by the tail shaft you should see the bulg it looks like a wheel bearing cover for front rotors.pop the cap out and pull out govener gear it might be striped out.

 

If you are lucky, the governor gear is stripped, or the governor is sticking. If you are unlucky, you burnt the band.

 

if it's the governor, the car will feel like it wants to shift, but doesn't ... I had this problem.... I too have gone through 7 trannys in a short period of time...

well my last Tranny was my 7th, a planetary gear broke, or at least that's what I was told was in the pan, I replaced the tranny with a high performance 700 HP capable Tranny, worked great, but Torque converter fell apart and ended up replacing just the converter, a few months later, I started noticing car wouldn't hit it's first shift till 22mph, skipping the 12mph shift... no slipping at all, still shifts at 22mph the way it would shift after shifting at 12mph... I've been reading and also have been advised it could be a clogged valve body, dirty governor, or a TV Cable out of adjustment.. don't know right now.. will worry about it when I do an FI conversion in the next 6 months... or so I hope...

 

i started the car today and the tranny seemed to pull when i put it in drive. so i drove it down the road and it seemed to be fine. after a few miles i lost all gears except first and reverse. i got the car into the garage, checked the tranny fluid, and now it seems fine. could this be the gov. gear sticking? if so, how do i remove this gear?

a burned up trans will act fine cold some and slip when hot sometimes

i dont mess with trans other than pulling and installing dont know about the govern, sure its on a post somewhere around here or in the tech board

 

the governor gear is striped. i'm really not having much luck at the local parts house. the chevy dealer told me they can have me one monday afternoon, but i hate to wait that long. it's a nice day and i want to drive my car!

 

check to see if Napa Auto Parts exist in your area, or call local transmission shops and ask if they got one...
or go to a local wrecking yard aka junk yard... and see if there's a firebird or Camaro with a tranny still mounted...

 

call the local junk yard it will work from any 700r4 mine cost $10 for whole govener.i got mine out of a fullsize pickup,i still have an extra to if you cant find one.if you get just the plastic gear get a new pin to have pressed in as the old one might break when pressed out.

 

go all out and get a corvette servo along with a corvette governor... your neck will thank you...

me too.. I would keep breaking either the planetary gear or the sprag... on this current tranny, I have an undiagnosed problem... it's a tranny that is advertised to hold 700+ HP... I don't think anything broke internally... but will figure it out once my car gets back on da' road...

 

i went to a local salvage yard and got the entire governor for five bucks. shifts great!
