Pro's of Swapping to 3.73, fourth gen rear...

I found a rear end from a 1999 Firebird Firehawk. I believe they came with 3.73 (after trying to find tech data on google that seems to be the consensus), its should be a posi trac and has disc brakes. The guy wants $150 for the rear end, I am sure I could get it for $100. I have read the tech article on how to do it I am just wondering what I have to gain by doing it and if it is worth the money and time.

No fbody came with 3:73's, might be 3:42's. and the advantage to the 4th gen rear is disc brakes if you don't have them. other then that the same rear that was in the later camaro/firbirds.

Are you sure? I know the Firehawk was a special performance edition made by SLP and I've seen on the web that some six speeds came with 3.73 gears.

He give me pretty decent deals on my parts. He's a local body guy and I have bought alot of stuff off of him so I wouldn't doubt it. He only bought the car for $500.

Would it be a good investment though really is my question?

If it's what it's represented to be, yes. $150 is a great price regardless.

For 150 that's a very nice price, go and buy it.

update: SO this guy knows his old cars but not his new ones. Because I got to looking at it and its a 1993-1997 Firehawk. And I haven't been able to find anywhere on the internet saying that any of those years came with 3.73 gears.

thats because they never had 3.73's factory in the lt1 firehawks, even the lt4 models had 3.42's or 3.23's

Thank you! lol that's why I made this thread to double check the facts. I don't know if its worth the trouble to put in a new rear when the only real benefit is the disc brakes. I already have 3.23's. If I do the swap then I will need to get new wheels so I will probably just stick with stock for now I think.

well if it came out of a 6spd car at least you will have a little more gear and the 4th gen rear end will probably have a posi in better shape. do you ever plan on running 4th gen wheels or vette wheels?
