confused about Vss and manual trans swap

hey guys,

I have a 1988 GTA with digital dash, all stats are in sig. I'm doing and engine and trans swap. i'm going from 305 to 350 and auto to manual trans. This is about the trans, obviously. I just picked up a t-5 transmission. it doesn't have a VSS in the tail housing. Questions: can i just swap the VSS from the auto to the manual? if not, what exactly do i need? do i need to replace the gear inside the trans? I've done searches on google and TGO and couldn't find specific answers. Let's start with the basics!

Thank you!

The auto won't fit the T-5. You can probably purchase the T-5 VSS from PATC:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm

The following link provides T-5 drive and driven gears:

Re: confused about Vss and manual trans swap

i did some homework on the trans and it's a 1983 V8 t-5. it has the exact same gear ratios as a WC t-5 from 1988. what are the odds that the drive gear inside the trans is good to use? how can i tell?

Probably pretty good. I've never heard that they were prone to failure (Mine's been working for 25 years or so, for example). With the driven gear removed, you should be able to give it a peek.

BTW, I see you're going to put the trans behind a 350. While I've never experienced any difficulties, I suppose because of my sedate driving habits, others have claimed calamity when the car's driven race track hard.

Re: confused about Vss and manual trans swap

James i can't thank you enough for this info!

i'll have to take a peek insides once the storm stops. it's like a monsoon out there!

PATC didn't have any VSSs. i guess the dealer is the only other place to get one? i have 3.27 rear gears. i guess use the brown 18 tooth driven gear?

Yeah, i was told the trans was rebuilt and upgraded inside. i don't know if it's WC grade but this trans is just for the mean time. once i get an engine and she can move on her own power, then i can go on the hunt for a WC. Definitely won't be raced until i get a WC.

While the number of the teeth is probably the same as the 3.23, the gear itself may be slightly different--check the link as I'm generally unfamiliar with the tail shaft mounted VSS.
