91 formula borg warner 9 bolt rear wheel seal help!!!

I have a 91 formula (305e) with a borg warner 9bolt from a 87 ta, it has discs, the passenger side wheel seal is leaking, how do I remove the axle to get this wheel seal replaced?

I have heard tha t 9 bolts dont have C clips like 10 bolts do. is there anything special that I need to do or just unbolt the wheel and caliper bracket and pull? do i need to remove the bearing from the axle or is it pressed into the tube? any help would be appreciated, ive searched here and all over google but no real steps for the 9 bolt , all c clip stuff.

thanks!!!

you will need to take the disc hat off, and unbolt the retainer from the housing end, 4 bolts. thats the easy part. A slide hammer and the assembly will pull out, and you will be left with an axle assembly consisting of these things in this order:

axle>>retainer plate>>axle seal>>bearing>>bearing sleeve.

now for the painful part. all that stuff to the right of the seal needs to be pressed off to get to the seal. while you are there, it might be useful to replace the axle bearing. you will most likely damage the retainer ring getting it off, so you will need a new one.

Remove the wheel, caliper assembly, and rotor. Then remove the 4 nuts holding the axle in place. Then remove the axle, you may need to use a rubber mallet against the back side to pop it loose or some other form of persuasion. Try not to rotate the axle during removal as there are two sets of splines in the carrier and they will become misaligned and make reinstallation difficult. Yes, the bearings are on the axle and will have to be removed to replace the seal so might as well do both axles since you're in there.

Bearings will be junk after being pressed off and you will need replacements (Timken SET-9 or its equivalent part number) for the oil seal Ratech RAT-6131 for the passenger side/driver side RAT-6130. When looking for parts for the 9-bolt, try searching under GM 7 3/4 rear.

Re: 91 formula borg warner 9 bolt rear wheel seal help!!!

Thank you both, I managed to get it all off (wasnt hard) did not need a slide hammer, just yanked real hard a few times and the axle popped out, the seal was toast, the bearing looked good, but got a new one with the parts listed. the seal was special order (go figure) but it came in overnight, took it to my local auto place that has a press and they did it all for 25 bux, the rear was in great shape, I bought it from this board a few years back (like5 yrs?) and it was redone then, I guess because I let my ride sit so much (only drive it like 25-40 miles in a year) it had a dry spot that ripped when I moved the car. I picked up the completed axle last night and put it back in , so im back in buisness, thank you both for the help, its priceless.

Re: 91 formula borg warner 9 bolt rear wheel seal help!!!

autozone lists this part as the pinion seal:
7457N

driver side seal:
224255

passenger side:
710179

check autozone or rockauto for parts when you need to look something up, very helpful and organized relatively decently.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but those 4 bolts wouldn't happen to be the ones that are holding the Caliper Mounts on are they? If they are, Can i pop out the axles and pop em back in without changing anything?

Yes they are, but you wont be able to move the caliper off of the disc in order to slide the axle out if you leave the caliper mounted to the mounting plate. Its only 2 extra bolts anyways.
About popping axles in and out without chaing anything, sure you can, but why do you want to take it out if nothing is wrong with it? (if it aint broke, dont fix it?)

I agree with the above. Remove brakes, remove the 4 bolts on the retaining plate. The axle will pull out. It may be easier to mark the orientation prior. It took longer for me to re-align the splines afterwards to get to the axle to go all the way in. I removed mine to put in some new ARP wheelstuds last Fall since the new studs would not go in with the axle installed.

I was considering changing the Caliper mounts to ones from a 93-97 Camaro.
