PICS: 4th Gen Rear Prep and Paint Before Install

Hey guys. I figured I'd clean up and paint my 4th Gen rear assembly, while I wait for my proportioning valve purchase.

I'll start the thread with these pics and add new pics, as I progress through the cleaning and painting of the darn thing.

Here's when I first got it a few days ago:

Here it is yesterday, after removing the brake lines, calipers, and rotors and after degreasing and scrubbing the heck out of it. It's kinda nice that the abs wires/plug just unplugs from that sensor plug on top of the housing.

Scraping the caked on crud out of every nook and cranny was sort of a pain, but it's almost ready for the Rustoleum "Rust Reformer."

The rust seems impossible to get off. I'm painting it a two color pattern--black and orangish red. It should look sweet when I'm done. I'll post pics when it's finished.

I would suggest the POR-15 starter kit, if you want a paint job to last.

Cool.....thanks. I'll check out the POR-15 kit. I found it. Looks like good stuff. I just got done hitting it with Rustoleum, then I saw your posting.

Re: PICS: 4th Gen Rear Prep and Paint Before Install

That Rustoleum Rust Reformer is weird stuff. I never used it before. It dried white in a few places, and it's supposed to dry black. I'll sand it off a little where it dried white. I guess it wasn't quite as rusty as I thought in some places.

Where can you get this POR-15 kit? I'm about to do a fourth gen swap as well and would like to paint my rear axle also.

Look at the link I posted four posts up, Shady.

Here is how mine turned out with Rustoleum engine enamel. It looks much better, in my opinion.

Thanks.

It came with whatever brakes are on a 97 Camaro Z28. I know they're disc brakes but that's all I know.

Order it on-line from their site, about $20 for the complete kit. It will be more then enough to do the job plus other touch ups.

93-97 = LT1
98+ = LS1

The LT1 PBR's are, for the most part, identical to the 89-92 version. The LS1's look much different.

Looks good man. I can't wait to find a nice one to swap in because LS1 rear discs will be a huge difference over my stock drums. I plan to prep and paint mine too and also install a TA diff cover. Keep us posted on the install.

I'll post up pics of my car, with the 4th gen rear. I'm imagining the tires being just about even with the fender wells.

Re: PICS: 4th Gen Rear Prep and Paint Before Install

From what I've read on here about this swap the LT1 axle is a few inches wider so the wheels will still out the sides more. Also the 15 in wheels may not fit the rear brakes without adjustments, but that might have been only for the LS1 rear. I'm not sure if you had stock 15 inch wheels on there like many of the 1986 Z28s came with. There is a sticky that has the info.

There's info in the following link about the width of the two fourthgen axles, should anyone be interested:

The paint job looks awesome. Did you spray it with clear coat? I'm ordering my POR-15 kit now, so I can paint mine as well.

No clear coat...just Rustoleum "Hammered Look" for the axle tubes and Rustoleum engine enamel for the housing.

If it lasts a while, great...if not...oh well.

I got the black POR-15 kit, but plan to paint the housing a different color. What color do you guys think would be best? I was thinkin either orange or red.
