Hey guys, Like a fool I cut the old ring off the 96 4l603 thinking i could just put my plastic speedo gear on there and the computer didnt need it, so I have a new reluctor ring to install, 40 tooth, how do I get it on there? I had to cut the old one off...

Really, really old thread, but I'm actually in this situation right now lol...

 

it presses on. you might bend it trying to tap it on with a hammer. if the transmission is apart, it's easy. if not....

 

I have the tailshaft housing offbut the trans is still assembled.

 

Tap tap tap.

A pipe that presses around the reluctor evenly is better than tapping around every side repeatedly. Plus, you won't damage the teeth.

 

I tried tapping it last night but with the trans assembled, I have no leverage. I'm going to have to go with a three jaw puller and try to get it out that way.

 

A little heat works too

 

need a torch for that. Maybe I'll pick one up while renting the puller

 

Doesn't need much heat, go easy

 

I'll keep that in mind. Just enough to get it warm so I can slide it.

 

If you're removing it, put a cheap open end wrench (spanner for a grinder, etc.) under it and tap from the trans. side. That gets it off the T5 and T56 stuff. A pretty weak 2 or 3 jaw puller with straps to extend the jaws will should get it done at llast resort.
