9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
i just got my car up and running after an almost two year sit. The car posi'd but for about five feet(which was all the longer i kept my foot in it) my friend said turning into a 1 tire
.. I did let off about the time he said it turned into a 1 tire so im not sure if that has anything to do with it, but im sure at 147k miles its ready for something.. The gears were replaced along with a rebuild kit from randysringandpinion.biz (or something close to that) about ~1000 miles on that(2 years ago).. so, to get to my question. From 9bolt.com or any other site their may be for that matter. What do i need to get my posi back? Exact parts would be a great help.
Side notes- Im sticking with the 9bolt dont suggest anything else

randys ring & pinion is still in business, http://www.ringpinion.com
Depending on the condition of your rear end you may need a new center section, new cones or just machined cones and some shimming.

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
would a new carrier from 9bolt.com fix all three?
or the "posi overhaul kit" (Includes 2 posi cones as well as spider gear kit)

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
It all depends on the condition of your case. If it's worn out new cones won't help

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
the shop did not say anything about the case being worn out, however i beleive they did something wrong and could be the cause.. when i push on the side of the wheel the axle kind of clunks and moves slightly.. it did this straight out of the shop and since the car sat i never got around to taking it back

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
The case is internally spring loaded. The end of the axle sits in a cup and between the cup on each side are 3 preload springs from big to small that sit in each other. This could be your problem although it could also be your wheel bearings, there shouldn't be any excess play there.
You can see it here, the cup in the center of the right part is where the axle rests against

2 machined cones:

ok, thank you for those images that really helped.
new wheel bearings, and new cones are in order. would you recommend spider gears too or do you think they are fine

hard to tell really, before ordering a bunch of stuff it would be wise to pull the posi and inspect it to see what you need. You'll never know what's lurking in there otherwise.
You may need bearings too, the wearing posi sends metal everywhere. I would suggest a good sized magnet installed somewhere when the overhaul is complete.

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
i had the bearing kit installed with the gears.. think they would be worn out after only 1000 miles?
im also debating on a new carrier from 9bolt.com $455 after shipping (not new) says good used
or the new cones, spider gears, bearings $560

Usually no but if the wheel has slop when pushing it sideways, something is not right.

Re: 9 bolt posi rebuild parts help
yea, it had that straight out of the shop.. i actually remember mentioning something to him about it now.. he said something about the axles.. i asked so i need new axles, he said no and then explained something im not sure if it was the wheel end or differential end he was talking about.. I did record a 17 year old uncertified kid removing the axles with a large hammer of some sort and taking the carrier out.. they didnt start back up on the car until the next day and i wasnt around.. the shop is across the street from my relatives house so i had the cam in the window.. im wondering if he didnt mess something up
maybe ill just take it to a different shop and see what the damage is
