700R4 Stuck in Drive

Ok so I was pulling into my driveway, came to a stop and went to put it in park. The shifter moved without any of its usual resistance into park, but when i let off the brake it lurched forward. I tried every other position but it wouldn't click into any other gear.

I rolled it back and drove it onto some ramps to check the cable was connected. I had already checked up by the shifter itself. It seemed attached, but I don't have anything to compare it to. I pushed the shift lever and it clicked through the gears into Park. I was then able to start it up and shift into R-N-and D, but then it was stuck in D again.

It seems to me that once in park it ratchets out to shift properly, but the cable doesn't properly push the lever back up when going towards park.

Any ideas, diagrams, or suggestions are appreciated.

It appears only to be a cable issue, because it drives fine in drive and shifts gears when I manually click the lever. I'll be replacing the cable and hopefully that will solve my issues.

ulmty, what brand cable did you get? The only one I've been able to find is the Dorman cabel from the local parts stores. The cable seems lacking compared to the OEM one. The grommet doesn't seal, and the plastic that clips in the counsel is not fitting very well either. I am looking for GM, but it's been discontinued.

I could only find the dorman as well and seeings as I needed the car asap, I went with it. It works but doesnt snug in perfectly. I occasionally have trouble putting it in park, it will not travel perfectly and get stuck in between R and P. It has only happened twice in the last few weeks.

Re: 700R4 Stuck in Drive

i had the same problem,i used a grinder to give the shifter a little extra travel (1/8 of an inch) forward into park.(under the shifter plate in the car.

Re: 700R4 Stuck in Drive

Mitchell383, thanks. The GM part is discontinued, so you are lucky to have gotten one. 84 Z28 had recommended Hawks, they only had a few GM cables left. I got one through them.
