im thinking of buying this 93 donor car for the lt1 swap it has a auto transmission everything intact for 600-1000 (good deal???) so i will be needing a t56 but i was wondering for my dads 88 iroc-z 5.0 with tpi has a bad tranny (will not come out of second) so was wondering if i could switch the 4L60 from the 93 in place of the 700R4 because its shot. Has any body done this just wondering so i can revive my dads Iroc-z

 

you could if you got a stand alone tranny control unit.. the 4l60e which is what is in an
LT1 car is electronic controlled unit... basically the same tranny as te 700r4 just uses a computer instead of a throttle valve cable..

It controls the trans becuase there is no computer there to do that. You would have to REALLY want that trans in there to buy a stand alone control unit. You could almost buy a new trans for the price of them. But if your interested, heres a link. You would still have to get the wiring harness and a laptop to program it.

According to Wikipedia, you are correct. 93 was the last year of the 4l60. If this is the case, and the trans is not computer controlled, then it will go right it.

 

4L60 is the same as the 700R4 - no computer needed to control it. 1993 Fbodies should have the 4L60, so its a direct swap. The 4L60E was the PCM controlled tranny (E for Electronic), and should not be present until 1994 models.

 

Is the tail shaft housing the same? If not it is easy enough to swap over. Im thinking of the torque arm mount.

 

Yep - 4th gens had same rear, same torque arm, same length, etc. Only thing with the 4th gens that was different was the length of the rear axle (different offset on the rims).

 

yeah if its got the throttle valve cable on hooked to the side of the throttle body then it is the 4l60 but if it happens to be a late model 93 it might have the electronic...which wouldnt be worth the hassle...

No not throttle cable... ( throttle vavle cable) also know as the TV cable it runs to the tranny when you accelerate the TV cable changes the line pressure on the tranny so you dont burn it up... do a search on TV cable in here it'll explain it all
