Should I swap my 10 bolt for a 9 Bolt?

So I have an opertunity to swap my 1LE 10 bolt with 4.10 gears gor a 9 bolt with 3.5X gears. I need the lower gear ratio for my turbo setup. The guy who owns it has done the matainence on it regularly. Its been rebuilt years ago. My rear end is pretty much just a gear chance and has the lower control arm relocation on it thats pretty much it.
So my ??? are
1: Should i swap for the lower gear ratio I need and the little bit of ectra strength?
2: Can I keep my larger 1LE brakes and put them on the 9 bolt?

THanks for any help guys I dont know a whole lot about rear ends.

I personally wouldn't waste my time with either one. I would get a 9" or a 12 bolt and be done. You wouldnt have to worry about breaking it. There are guys running fast cars (9 sec turbo cars) on here, but there are also NA guys in the 12 breaking them. I'm nowhere near the power of a turbo LSx, but I still bought the 9" just so I know I dont have to worry about it.

I kinda need to recoupe the money this winter so i can afford a S60 for next year. I just need something to tune the car with and I can drive around one maybe a few highway pulls. Ya I'm pretty sure that my 750+ HP car will destroy most rearends. Hence why i've opted for a 60

i wouldn't waste my time swapping them, and just wait for the 60 IMHO.

...sounds like a sweet ride! I've got the LSx bug, i just need an extra atmosphere or two for my z28.

At least when a 10 bolt breaks, you can get parts for it.

Re: Should I swap my 10 bolt for a 9 Bolt?

my personal opinion is....

Use 10 bolt for the test/tune purposes

I say this because I have been 990s on the stock 7.5" 10 bolt rear ends

(One of our racer friends has a 88 monte ss that runs 950s on 7.5 10 bolt leaving on a 250 shot off the line)

The 9 bolts I have had bad luck I was braking them with a 355 running 13s lol

Plus they are so damn hard to find parts for....

Either one you use most likely will break. So do some research on were parts are and how cheap they are

And then you have people like my brother. The camaro I have use to be his. When he had it, it still had a bone stock L98 and he wound up breaking 3 teeth off the pinion on street tires. Just proves that they really are hit or miss.

Well I guess all that makes more sense then "just get a better rear end". I unfortunittly went way way over budget with this car and I have to wait to get a good rear. I just didnt want to have to dyno a turbo car on 4.10s. I guess I'll find some stock rear gears to throw into it for now.
