looking to upgrade my axle shafts but to what?

i have a 82 z28 camaro with rear disc posi axle in the rear, i was looking at beefing up my rear end without having to replace the whole axle asm, i was looking at upgrading my axle shafts and propley the pois unit. i have a 383 stroker motor that i plan to supercharged down the road im not sure what the motor makes for power since it came with the car when i bought. i plan to take the car out to the drag strip and some auto x racing. any ideas would be great thanks.

The following FAQ will provide some food for thought:

You may, however, wish to upgrade the entire rear end if you're going to push it hard.

Personally, I wouldn't put much money into a 10 bolt if you plan on drag racing it, especially into the axles. You'll break the pinion gear before you break the axles anyway, and there's really nothing you can do about that. The only $$ I'd put into it is an aluminum diff cover, with the bearing supports built in.

Save the money you'd spend on the 10 bolt, and put it towards a Ford 9" or GM 12 bolt in the future

Re: looking to upgrade my axle shafts but to what?

Your 82 will have 26 spline axles. Aftermarket 28 spline axles are better than factory ones (90-92) but as mentioned above, don't go investing a whole lot into the 10 bolt. No matter what you try to do to beef it up, you'll still have a tiny, weak, ring and pinion. To upgrade to 28 spline axles, you'll also need to buy a new posi designed for 28 spline.

The 10 bolt can take a lot of abuse as they've survived behind BBC cars on the dragstrip but have also been broken on the street with a factory engine power car.

Re: looking to upgrade my axle shafts but to what?

with as many times as I've had the ring and pinion replaced in my "beefed" ten-bolt i could have bought a moser 9 inch.

but, if it'll make ya feel all warm inside, here's what to buy:

Eaton Posi 3 series 28 spline
Motive Gearset 3 series
Superior axles 28 spline
Summit Aluminum HD differential cover
Solid Pinion Spacer
Deluxe installation kit
2 qts lakewood 80w90 gear oil
spohn relocation brackets
weld the axle tubes around the pumpkin

....anyways.

Also, put the car on a diet. Any weight you can take out of it will help relieve the stress put onto the rear end.

A Truetrac or Torsen will probably fit your needs best for auto cross. The 28 spline axles will require a 28 spline differential.
