700R4 Flexplate replacement
I have a 91 z28 convertible which was running great, then it started making this chirping sound coming from the flexplate.
I drop the inspection cover and my flexplate is cracked pretty bad! The chirping sound is when the flexplate skims the starter housing.
So my question is this.......how the hell can I get this car up high enough to move the tranny back to fix the plate?
I bought 2 sets of ramps from autozone and I can barely get under the damn car!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
On top of everything else its like 100 degrees out!!

Put the car on 4 jackstands. Get a couple 6" 3/8-16 grade 8 bolts, and thread them into the block in place of two of the stock bellhousing bolts. Then just unbolt everything so you can slide the transmission and the torque converter back so you can remove the flexplate. Use new flexplate bolts, or at least lock tite, on the new flexplate. I want to say the worst part of the job on my car was dropping the Y pipe and converters. It's not a quick or easy job but it's do-able. It's about like swapping the transmission but without lifting the transmission back up into the car.

Re: 700R4 Flexplate replacement
I started to do this over the weekend, I dropped the pan and pulled the valve body to install a shift kit and pulled out the servo on the side, I hope this makes the tranny a little lighter! So far I found out my 1-2 accumulator spring was broken, sure that is one of the reasons my z28 drives like crap!
Thanks for the input, I'm going to see if home depot has those bolts.

Just found out I need to rebuild my trans, this sucks! Apparently the crap in the bottom of my trans pan was my 3-4 clutch pack! I'll be pulling the trans out today

Ok, so I pulled my trans out last night, I just have one question.....Who the hell designed the driverside transmission tunnel? it took me longer to get the middle bellhousing bolt out then it did to actually drop the trans! I honestly have no idea how I am going to get that back in, and may leave it out

if you are talking about the upper bolts on the bellhousing ,,try by the top , right behind/below the valve covers...

Re: 700R4 Flexplate replacement
Yeah I used a 14mm ratching wrench to get the top two loose, then I used about 3ft of extensions to get them all the way out. The middle bolt on the driver's side is a royal pain! I may use an allen head bolt when I get the trans back together, this way if I ever have to take it out again it will be a hell of a lot easier!!

A second opinion would be appreciated, my old starter was no good, something went in the solenoid, I put a brand new starter in, no shims, and when I go to start the car, the starter has power and everything but when it goes to engage the flex plate it barely is getting out far enough to even touch of the flex plate, like its barely clipping the plate so it can't turn over well enough to start, it skips... Would that be the result of a bent flexplate
