28 spline axles interchange?

does the axle splines of a Borg Warner 9 bolt rear match with the 10 bolt 28 spline? maybe someone can check this who has several rears laying around.

the reason i like to know about is the folowing.
i have a borg warner rear end in my t/a and just started drifting.
i rebuilt the lsd with new cones from 9-bolt.com, but just 1 full day drifting used them up complete.
since the options for the borg warner are very few i'm considering some fabrication and just thinking about puting a powertrax or eaton locker into my rear.

since there is no locker for the borg warner, i wondered if at least the splines of the borg warner axles would fit to a locker unit designed for a 7.5" 10 bolt with 28 splines. with some machining the locker woud be a easy fit into the borg warner carrier.

after all i would prefer to stay whith the borg warner since the axles are way more rigid and it allready comes whithout c-clips

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

ist the 10 bolt 28 smaller or larger than the Borg warner spline?
resplining the 28 locker will be easier than to start with 26

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

Why not just get a new 12 bolt with the tapered roller axle bearings? This would be a better rear end all around. You could get it with a Detroit Locker, Eaton Posi or Truetrac and the press on 9 inch Ford tapered roller bearings would do away with the c clips. The 12 bolt doesn't weigh much more than the 9 bolt and it doesn't take more power to turn it.

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

you are right with the 12, i've got one in my other t/a... it's nice, but it's a pretty heavy pice and expencive too. if i'd go that way, it woud have the mark williams road race big axles with 45mm id double row bearings like the one in my other car, so there is a housing, cover, axles, bearings, gears, locker unit, a biger torque arm, etc. let let me end up with$2500 to 3000....... the the whole mess needs to be shipped over to Germany, and finaly i need to fit my brakes to that thing..........

on the other hand there is a locker insert for just $400 that needs to be fitted into a existing carrier and ships easily...... and its just for my daily driver.

know what i like to say?

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

I hadn't noticed that you were in Germany. I was wondering why you were going to so much trouble to fix up the 9 bolt.

There is a German built differential for the 9 bolt. I don't remember what it is, but it is very expensive over here. Maybe someone else will remember what it is. I don't have a set of 9 bolt axles here, so I can't check their fit to a 10 bolt differential, but I do have a 9 bolt differential. I'll stick a 10 bolt axle in it and see what happens.

I guess you mean Drexler, yes i've seen that too, looks very nice but least expencive they build goes for €2700 or $3500.... just the diff....

Do you have a 10 bolt 28 axle around? what is the od of the splines?

Don't need to check. The 10 bolt 28 spline axles are just as different from a BW axle as a ford axle is to a 12 bolt axle. There's more to it than just axle splines. They are completely different axles in completely different housings.

The only thing similar between the diffs is the external mounting to install them in a third gen. Internally, nothing is interchangeable.

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

The 10 bolt axle has a major diameter of 1.205 inches and a minor diameter of 1.125 inches at the splines as measured with my Brown & Sharpe dial calipers. I only checked one axle, so the size might vary some.

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

The pressure angle on the splines might also be different, so check that too.

Re: 28 spline axles interchange?

The right & left side axle shafts are of different length for the BW 9-bolt. So they will not work as No 9-bolt parts will interchange with a 10-bolt.

That was my first thought.

Before trying to custom-machine a carrier to fit a different housing, I would:

get a correct-width rear axle assembly (that has parts avail. in Germany!,) fabricate a rear-cover torque-arm mount (a'la GNX) and weld shock / control arm mounts.
