Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?

I am preparing to do a T5 swap very soon and am trying to verify that I've got everything I need. I currently have:\

T5 w/ Bellhousing and shifter, fork/arm
T5 Torque arm bracket
ES torque arm mount (I assume that even though the T5 and 700 mounts are different, the actual bushing is the same)
Clutch pedal assembly and matching switches mounted to it
Clutch reservoir/bracket
Plastic line between the slave/master (going to get swapping for braided, but this will work to get it moving)
Flywheel
Smaller starter

I will be buying in the next few days (hopefully):

A new clutch kit with with new throwout and pilot bushing
Inspection cover
Slave/Master cylinders

Do I need different bolts for the flywheel or will my flexplate bolts work? How about for the bellhousing, will the 700R4 bolts work?

Does that just about cover everything? This is all going in my 91 Z28 that currently has a 700R4.

If I'm missing anything, let me know; The swap may be starting this weekend and I'd hate to run into a situation of not having critical parts.

Re: Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?
I just finished my swap. You definitely need new flywheel bolts. The flexplate bolts are too short. You will also need a set of pressure plate bolts. I got brand new sets of both at Advance, made by Mr. Gasket, IIRC.

The 700R4 bellhousing bolts will work fine with your T5 bellhousing.

You may also want to check the gearing in your VSS, to make sure that your speedo will read properly.

You will need a lower shifter boot to mount over the hole that you will be cutting in your trans tunnel.

Do you remember the P/N for the flywheel bolts? I have the bolts that came with the used pressure plate; are they ok to reuse?

I've got the lower boot figured out; How do I checked the VSS? IS the VSS the sensor itself on the tranny or something else? I figured I'd just try to swap between the auto and manual since both are electronic speedos.

Re: Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?
Your feet are protected by nothing more than a floorpan and an aluminum bellhousing.
Just go new aftermarket on the flywheel to crank and PP to flywheel bolts.

The 700-R4 and T5 use different speedometer drive gears. They also use different speedometer driven gears on their VSSs.

T5 driven gear teeth divided by drive gear teeth
should be equal to
700-R4 driven gear teeth divided by drive gear teeth
(an 84 Z28 L69 car would have 21 / 7 in a T5 or 45 / 15 in a 700-R4 for example.
(BTW, T5 21 and 20 tooth driven gears for VSS are a pain to find. Good luck on that.)

You may also need a 2 pin weatherpack connector for the T5 reverse lights switch (passenger side of the case)

I would buy LT1 4th gen hydraulics (they fit and work w/ the T5 bell.)

The U-bolt that holds the master cylinder to the firewall has m8 x 1.25 threaded ends. Do you have this?

Any idea on part numbers for this stuff? I've got AutoZone, Advance Auto, Napa, and Oreilly nearby. I assume its all over the counter or off the shelf stuff since its still a SBC.

Never messed with a VSS - Can I change these things with the trans in or will I have to pull it again?

There is a sensor on the side of the trans, but I dont have a connector for it; I was assuming the auto had one on it that I would use again; If I'm wrong, do I just wire this 2 wire connector into the original wiring on the plug from the auto shifter?

4th gen T5 or T56 stuff or is it all the same? Is it stronger or what's the advantage to going with 4thgen hydraulics?

Yup, Snagged it when I got my pedals.

Re: Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?
Using the used bolts is not recommended.

Flywheel bolts: DORMAN P/N 14052
Pressure Plate Bolts: MR GASKET P/N 910

I forgot about the reverse light pigtail. Good call. Most guys get it from TPI PARTS on ebay.

As far as the u-bolt is concerned, most guys just use two bolts, and that's what I did. It is probably more of a PITA to do it that way.

I am not sure if you are saying you were planning to swap the VSS unit, or just the gears. Neither way will work. You need a T5 VSS, and there is a sticky on figuring out the correct gear combination.

You can change the VSS with the trans in the vehicle, and the driven gear. The drive gear is on the output shaft, and you have to remove the tail of the trans in order to change it.

The sensor is the reverse light switch, and it does not have a corresponding connector on the automatic. You are correct in assuming you would wire it to the old shifter switch harness. Again, TPI PARTS on ebay will have the pigtail that you need.

Yes, and o'reilly and autozone's sites are good for looking the stuff up. Make sure the flywheel bolts are for a manual and longer than the ones you removed or reference motormite / mr. gasket's catalogues online. SBC are 7/16-20 flywheel to crank and 3/8-16 PP to FW.

The VSS is retained at the side of the tailhousing and can be removed with driven gear attached. The drive gear in a T5 is a 7 or 9 tooth. That's the only thing you need to pull the trans. to change if it's not right. See the sticky's for which one you need for tire / gear.

I think that yes, your reverse lights are at the shifter on an an F-body but I don't own an F-body.

Braided, longer line. Pre-bled and can just be installed. Ready when you break the T5 and need a T56.

Re: Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?
Just ordered the bolts for the flywheel and pressure plate. This swap is gonna nickle and dime me to death.

As for the master/slave cylinder - Is there a specific year 4thgen setup I need? From a T5 or T56?

Amen. It did me, too. That's just the way of this kind of stuff. Just think about how much fun that car will be to drive (trust me).

Just thinking about it - Lets see; Still have to buy:

New clutch kit ($99)
New Slave cyl ($36) +15 for 4th gen
New Mast cyl ($59) + ~20 for 4thgen
Flywheel resurfaced - $30
Lower Shiftboot - $23 at Lowe's
Fluids

About the reverse light thing: Is this what I need?

Re: Do I have everything I need for the T5 swap?
I did mine piecemeal, too. I also had to rebuild the T5, because it was shot... my total cost for the tranny and rebuild was about $600, not including the shifter and related parts.

The whole project set me back about $1000, maybe more.

For the record: The Dorman P/N is no longer available. I wound up getting the:

Pressure Plate Bolts: MR GASKET P/N 910
Flywheel Bolts: MR GASKET P/N 912

Just giving anyone else doing this swap the heads up.
