Flywheel starting problem 1992 camaro
I am looking to buy a 1992 camaro with 122,000 miles, 5 speed transmission, and a v6. He is selling it for $1000 but he says it wont start because somting is wrong with the flywheel. How hard is it to replace the flywheel and how much will it cost me.
Thanks

make sure it does have something to do with the flywheel. that sounds like a BS excuse to me, most likely has other problems.
the flywheel is bolted to the back of the engine, to replace it you have to remove the transmission and clutch assembly fromt he car. Not a terribly hard or uncommon thing to do, its all dont from the bottom of the car, so a lift would be ideal, but can also be done with floor jacks and jackstands. Or take it to a shop. Might as well figure on a new clutch and pressure plate while your in there.
but like i said, i dont see what could be wrong with the flywheel to keep the car from starting. Unless the teeth are broken off.
does the car crank at all? It all seems a little sketchy to me.

Not sure how this is an issue?
The flywheel and the starter only fit a 6-cyl, as does the T-5 and its BH for that matter; so all that will of course be going in the garbage anyway. Why worry about it?

i would ask about the flywheel, what exactly doesnt the car do that makes the guy think there is something wrong with the flywheel. with all the other work, it seems like they are chasing ghosts and cant get the car to start.
Re: Flywheel starting problem 1992 camaro
At firsthe thought it was the starter but then he took it to a mechanic and the starter was fine and the mechanic told him it was the flywheel. I will ask him what the mechanic exactly said.

Re: Flywheel starting problem 1992 camaro
It should run and drive with a busted flywheel / flexplate, mine did. Then I learned they only go on 1 way LOL. The bolt circle was ripped apart from the rest of the flexplate so it really wasn't connected, but it still drove some how. It made a good bit of noise, like a loose exhaust component would. Pulled the engine and tranny out thinking there was something wrong with the engine, separated the tranny from the block and the flexplate fell off!! The only other problem, other than the noise, was the starter wouldn't grab some times. After that I felt very lucky to be alive, I drove it like that for at least a week, alot of time for something terrible to happen. Ask whats wrong with it and why he thinks its the flywheel, get under the car and try to move it around. Try to start it for a second just to see if the guys trying to BS you, but no further than that.
