91 Camaro Stuck in drive and wont shift
Ok so i pulled into the garage and when i put the car in park it kept going foward. Every position i put the shifter in is basically a foward gear. Ive seen other post about this but today i was gonna see if the car would still drive fine and when i got on the road i only get to around 25mph and it just revs. I already ordered a new shifter cable and it is in the mail. So is it normal for a bad cable to cause it to not shift to go over 25mph? Any imformation would be helpful, ive already had the transmission recently rebuilt so hopefully i wont have to have it done again.

It's probably stuck in 2nd or 1st gear, that's why the low speed and high rpms. How are you even starting it without getting neutral or park?
You can reach down under the car, and push the shift lever on the driver side of tranny forward all the way to get to park (so it doesn't roll away). Hope you got a genuine GM shift cable, or you'll be getting another one soon!

Idk how its starting but when it does it surges foward. and the part i got is a ATP part. everyone said dorman was bad and i couldnt find a GM one. To reach the tranny will the car have to be lifted?

Re: 91 Camaro Stuck in drive and wont shift
But anyways, i got a shifter cable from Checker Auto and that was 4 years agao, still working great. I think i payed about 33$ for it. Make sure you put it in right and that everything is secure under neath the center console and you should be great.
As for how you are starting it without it being in neutral or park, im clueless. Mine wont even turn over when its not in either of the two.

Re: 91 Camaro Stuck in drive and wont shift
i asked a transmission guy and he thinks its in first not drive. im starting to think the same because when im driving and i let off the gas it feels like im using the brakes a little and it sounds like it does in first. but if im in first shouldnt it still be able to go over 25mph, just need to use more rpms?

In 1st your maxing out your power band of the engine before 25mph - 1st gear is so low I'm surprised you even reach 25mph without it really screaming at you - you need to stop driving it in this condition if you still are.
1) Your going to blow the motor
2) If somehow you are starting it in gear, your going to break the teeth off the flywheel when the starter engages it
You don't have to lift the car. I don't advise it, but when mine broke I actually was just barely able to hold one foot on the brake, open the door, and stretch far enough to reach the lever on the tranny to shift it into drive from park so that I could limp home. I'm sure I looked just grand doing it in the Kroger parking lot!

i got the part in today and i went out there to put the lever in park and i couldnt get it. how hard do you have to push it for it to go into park? it wasnt lifted and tomorrow it will be so maybe i just need to have more leverage or somthing while trying to put it in park.

Re: 91 Camaro Stuck in drive and wont shift
Well, end of last summer the 1st replacement cable took a **** (yr or 2 old). Luckily I had a few zip-ties to get me home. Bought a new one. Immediately after I threw it on, the plastic stops/tabs bent the other direction while I tested for any adjustment. Returned that one to Autozone only to find the same exact Pioneer brand at Murrays (except $12 more). So back to Autozone. This one worked but with a lot of adjustment and still more play than I can be happy with(but worked) Just pulled car out of winter storage this week and what do ya know? Cable gives while pulling it off of the storage bag! OEM cable lasted 18yrs. If anyone knows where I can find a nice sturdy, hi-perfomance cable? If not, I'll get back to the engineering table and try to modify these POS products... Thread
