Re: stall converter selection th400

Probably...

What does the car weigh? What's the .050" duration on both cam lobes? Had it chassis-dynoed so you know the engine's curves of HP & torque vs RPM?

With 300 degrees of advertised duration, you're probably going to want a converter that stalls at least 4000 rpm. Any lower and you're losing performance by keeping the engine rpms below the cam's best operating range.

You're probably also going to want a deeper gear in the diff to get the engine into those rpms quicker.

Re: stall converter selection th400

Call up a converter company and get one made for your combo. I started out using a 3500 stall and ended up with my current 4000 from Edge racing converters.

Re: stall converter selection th400

Converter stall is based on the cam grind. The rest of your combination of parts also need to compliment the cam grind for the best performance. Any combination of parts will work but may not be a perfect setup.

The only perfect way to know exactly which stall the converter should have is to put the engine on an engine dyno to see where the torque curve is. Other than that, you just need to know the operating range of the cam. For street or street/strip a converter should stall around 500 rpm into the powerband. A full race converter should stall around 1000 rpm into the powerband.

Look at your cam card. If it says the operating range is 3000-7000 then for full race, you'll want a converter that stalls around 4000 rpm.

Re: stall converter selection th400

On the line with trans brake engaged and pedel to floor. Is tha how you determine the true stall of the converter? I heard people say my converter stalls at X rpm and flashes at X rpm. Or is the max rpm the torque converter allows the engine to.spin while on the trans brake flash or stall speed?

Re: stall converter selection th400

Transbrake stall is the true stall of the converter however it also depends on how much torque is put into the converter. A converter that stalls at X rpm behind one engine may have a higher or lower stall if put behind a different engine. Rated stall speed is only a ballpark number.

You can also have a 8, 9 or 10" converter all stalling at the same speed and each will react differently.

The converter in my race car stalls at 6200 rpm on the transbrake. I've set the 2-step and launched at 4500-5000 rpm to let the converter flash slightly but my best 60' time is at full stall. I shift at 7400 rpm and the rpms drop back to 6400 after the shift. My camshaft makes the most power between 6000 and 8000 rpm so that's where I want to stay at WOT.
