Ordering Axles Question.

Hi i searched this

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-10-bolts.html

I kind of got my answer but i just wanted to confirm this. I have to order the rear axles (both sides are bent) I am a little confused on which one either the 26 or 28 spline. Says in the FAQ should be a 28 spline. Is there a way i can make sure it is? or look up the data on this? I know it is a 10 Bolt. Car is a 90' IROC Z 350. Also, How can i tell if its 7.6 or 7.5. It says in the FAQ it doesn't matter, is this true for replacing the bent axles? Thanks for the advice for this newbie.

7.5 or 7.625 really makes no difference unless you are replacing the internal parts of the carrier itself.

unless the axle was changed over te years, its should be 28 spline. but the only way to really tell is to take an axle out and count the splines. You have to do this anyway, so why not?

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

Only reason is because i drive it daily for work. The axles that are bent are only slight but they make the discs wobble a couple millimeters which in turn makes the brakes touch and gives me a nice squeaking noise as i drive. This is how i found it out because otherwise you wouldn't notice much unless you were trying to find this out. I appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

Only takes about 10 minutes to pop an axle out, if you're slow like me. You can probably do it faster. In the time you've spent asking about it, you coulda just looked.

If you decide to replace them, I suggest these. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SAG-EV10-4/

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

hmmm, are you sure its the axles and not warped rotors? i find it hard to believe both axles are slightly bent.

if they were, you would end up with pad nockback, and the brake pedal would feel like its not even there the first time you press it, for a inch or so.

are the rear rotors old? age? i would try that first if you havent already

pads touching the rotors wont squeal, they will heat up and warp the rotors.... me thinks you have other issues.

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

I have that axle kit myself. Works great. Better than "custom" axles, such as Moser, since this is a stock application; they're mass-produced, which allows them to be annealed (softened), splined (by rolling I think, although I could be wrong about that, rather than cutting), then tempered (hardened), the whole process of which takes weeks. Too long for a 1-2 week turnaround like the custom axle guys provide, so they just use soft metal, and spline by cutting, and very minimal re-hardening if any. They're MUCH stronger as a result. Not a knock against those other guys; just, they provide a product and a service that's appropriate for non-stock setups and/or short lead times, and there's compromises that come with that, that aren't required in your case. Leave the "custom" axles to "custom" situations.

It's ASTOUNDINGLY easy to bend an axle. All it takes is a mild curbing in the rain or something. They have almost no strength in that direction. I bent one in my car years ago, in a parking lot driveway, sliding sideways off the crown of the driveway on black ice; probably wasn't going 5 mph when it happened. Bent it so bad you could just look at the wheel and tell something was messed up.

Pads touching the rotor on a bent axle WILL make funky noises, as the caliper will be constantly getting slid back and forth on the pins.

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

Nope it is definitely the axles. I just changed the rotors to brand new ones because i thought it might be the problem. changed to different brake pads, rebuilt calipers while i was at it to. If i take the wheel off and let it idle i can see the wobble for sure. It wobbles to where it will slightly touch the brakes when it hits the high point of the wobble. Which makes it have the squeak noise, so it sounds like squeak - squeak - squeak - squeak going down the road until i compress the brakes. Really appreciate you thinking into it. This has been a problem for a while now and i am just now finding out why it has been where i could never fix the brakes from squeaking. Thanks again guys.

Re: Ordering Axles Question.

Thanks for the info sofakingdom. I think i will give these a try. I don't know how they bent but i go really easy on this car and i cant figure out why. And yes that is exactly why its making a funky noise. At first i thought it was my rims then i thought it was the rotors, put brand new rotors on it and it is making that little wobble still, that's how i figure it is the axles. Thanks for all the insight both of you. Much appreciated.
