hi im new here and was wondering what my problem could possibly be with my tranny i have an 83 z28 with a 5speed and its the manual clutch style. all the gears shift great and i have no problems with them except for fifth gear. when it goes in gear it is fine but for some reason sometimes it is real hard to get into 5th gear i have to smash the stick up and let the clutch out and hope it goes in. ive checked the fluid and it is fine. i dont think this has anything to do with it but last year the bearing went in my rear end and it shifted into fifth wonderful on the way home when my rearend was humming. i then changed the rearend out and it shifted like S**t again and still does it

any help would be greatly appreciated

 

sounds like a synchro or blocker ring........

 

how hard is that to fix ive never attempted to fix a tranny before

 

Well the tranny has to come out, and apart. Its not the easiest of jobs, but manual trans. are easier than autos.

 

probably 2-3 hrs.....ive gotten down to having my trans out in 10 minutes....includes putting it up on a lift as well........

 

the 5 speeds are easier to do than the lt1/ls1/corvette 6 speeds

 

ive had the tranny out before thats not a problem its just that ive never been inside the tranny what would i need to buy a rebuild kit? or can i just order what i need

 

you will have to take it apart( remove the tail section) be care full of the shift rail and check ball .there is a pin that holds the cup onto the shift rail.. then find out what is worn or broken and most cases can order those specific parts either from a gm dealer or transmission shop

 

You might as well get a rebuild kit while your in there and have it apart. Then you know everything is fresh and you have a good trans. Plus, you can get a master rebuild kit for $100-$150, usually with free shipping online.

Best of luck to ya bud. You should take lots of pictures and leave plenty of notes. I will be pulling mine apart here too (hopefully very soon). I am having an issue of popping out of gear and chattering/rocking/shaking like hell, in reverse. If you come across any tips, please share!
