How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

I am in the process of changing my diff gear from 3.45 to a 3.89 on my stock 9 bolt axle.

I have taken out the gear and the only problem is that I can't remove the "Drive Pinion Gear". I have use the "C-Claps" puller, but it still won't come out and I hammer it a bit and nothing is working.

Is there something I am missing or does it need special tools to remove it?

Let me know thanks.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Mine took about an hour of solid hits with the hammer to get it to loosen up. i just put the nut on the end loosely and kept hitting that

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Hi, I think i might have damaged my stock Drive Pinion Yoke and am looking for a new one just in case to replace it. I have not taken out my stock Drive Pinion Yoke yet.

There is someone is selling me a Drive Pinion Yoke used and I wanted to make sure is the correct one for the 9 bolt axle. I can't compare to my right now since the car is at my parent's place which is far from where I am now.

Does anyone know?

Hi,

I am not sure what you are trying to say. I dont understand? What do you mean the "cell phone pics?"

The pictures of the Drive Pinion Yoke was taken by someone else trying to sell it to me and I dont think it was taken from the cell phone.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

BIG ASSED AIR HAMMER is what I use at my shop to get em out. some are more difficult than others. You should be able to get the yoke off the pinion splines, then put the nut back on till it is flush with the threads and swing a sledge till it comes loose. Hope that helps.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

I finally got out the "Drive Pinion Gear". I did a comparison between my old 3.45 and new 3.89 "Drive Pinion Gear" that has the bearing roller wheel on it.

The 3.45 drive pinion gear "bearing" had 18 roller wheels on it and the diameter of the bearing was bigger. The 3.89 bearing had 17 roller wheels and smaller diameter than the 3.45 bearing.

Is this normal to have 17 roller bearing wheels? I was confused why the 3.45 bearing had 18 and bigger diameter than the 3.89 bearing.

Anyone know if this is okay or should it have 18 roller wheels?

See image of the bearing and is not my photo. I just happen to find it online and hope someone knows what I am talking about.

Please let me know thanks.

impact wrench would have been easier to take the pinion nut off.

Thanks,

I already got the nut off awhile ago and the whole gear is completed out.

I was asking about the bearing different between the 3.45 and the 3.89 roller wheels in my last post.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Probably just a different brand. One may be Timken, the other may be S&K or any other bearing brand. Just make sure you use a new race with a new bearing.

Thanks, I will change the bearing and use the larger diameter and 18 roller wheels.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Yes, bearing brands build their tapered roller bearings differently. I just ran into that on a T56.

But to be careful, what part of the bearing is larger?

You might check the part number on the wide face of the inner bearing race to be sure they are interchangeable.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Hi again,

What kind of grease brand do you guys use to put on your bearing?

The grease brand I have is "Valvoline" Crimson Heavy-Duty Grease Applications use for Trucking, Mining, Construction, Agricultural. Part #70124

Hope this helps and hope I have the right grease to be use.

Let me know thanks.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

That's fine. On a fluid lubrication assembly like a diff or trans., you're lubricating the bearing for initial start-up and splash in this case will take over almost immediately. And you're going to change lube in several hundred km anyway.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

I took the rearend to the shop to have them put the new gear in. They said that the bearing was damaged. So replaced it with a new bearing roller wheels.

Last, they said they could not get the pinion drive pattern to line up correct. I forgot how many inches off it was and or how many shims was installed. So they compared the 3.45 and the 3.89 pinions. The 3.89 pinion was 0.25" taller than the original 3.45 pinion and told me it will not work.

I talked to 9bolt.com and told me it was the right parts. I cannot find any informaiton what went wrong. I am thinking could it be the wrong new roller wheels bearing? The mechanic told me it was from the 9 bolt bearing he ordered.

Any help thanks.

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Wow, you have been trying for over a year to change these gears?

Look at the number on the old bearing. It should be the same number on the new bearing. If it's not the right number then it's not the right bearing. I recommend Timken bearings. If you have a bearing that is made in China then toss it in the trash QUICK and get a Timken bearing.

I had a lot of trouble setting up a set of 3.70 gears in a 9 bolt several years ago. I don't think the quality of the after market 9 bolt gears is very good. I didn't have any problems with OEM gears in the 9 bolt.

Yeah, I just havent had the time to work on it since the rear end is at my parent's place and I lived about 5 hours away. Now, I moved much closer to my parents which is about an hour away, but I just have other things to do.

I will check the bearings and compare it. Hope that is the solution to the problem.

Is this normal for the pinion to have different size length to other pinions?

Re: How to remove Drive Pinion Gear?

Sometimes the head thickness will vary with different gear ratios or brands, but it shouldn't be much. Some manufacturers will mark the pinion depth in the head of the pinion so you have something to go by if you are using a pinion depth tool. You said that yours was .25 taller. That's 1/4 inch, which is a huge difference. I'd have to have it here so I colud look at it before I could tell you anything about it, so it looks like I'm not going to be much help to you.
