you have described what happens when the 3-4 clutch goes on the 700's and 4l60's

it has to be dropped and opened up by a tranny guy unless you can rebuild it

part of the problem is that it was sitting, the miles become irrelevant

actually, you "set" the tv cable. There are instructions on this site and it takes about 30 seconds. You can try it but I don't want to get your hopes up.

What you do is drop the tranny yourself. If you have the tools it's not that difficult. Then, bring it to a shop and ask for a bench rebuild. Chances are that your hard parts are in good shape but the tranny guy can tell you for sure. In US dollars, a bench rebuild should be no more than $700 and that should include a rebuilt torque converter.

while the tranny is out it's a good time to replace the rear main seal in the engine and also since the car is 24 years old, slap in a new tranny mount as well.

Re: tranny problems

thanks for the reply mate
i think im just fighting a losing battle over here ive got a rebuild down to £1300 i don't know what that is in $ but its a lot no one is willing to just fix it a total rebuild or nothing?
were nearly all manual cars over here there classing it as a specialist job
maybe it would be cheaper for me to buy a reckoned one from the states and have it shipped over?i don't suppose you could recommend a company
also il have a look at that tv thing c how i get on with that
thanks again adam

And here in the states it's almost impossibel to find a vehcile with a manual transmission. I had to go 50 miles when I bought my Mustang to find a new one with a manny tranny. I've been driving manual trannies for 30 years and don't like automatics.

Anyway, the purchase price of a tranny here might be low but then with shipping charges, and enlisting a freight forwarder who would coordinate finding space in a container, import duties and tariffs in the UK and you're probably just as expensive.

Might I suggest sending a PM to Probuilt who is a member here. They rebuild transmissions. Perhaps they could engage in communication with your guy there, sell you a kit and maybe for a little more money offer tech support to the rebuilder.

It may just be a lack of confidence and experience from the people there and having an expert resource available might be enough for them to tackle the problem at a reasonable rate.

Even here in the states you find similar issues with the gen 2 SBC, the LT1. Not every shop is comfortable with that engine.

stock tachs on these vehicles are garbage. I replaced mine because just hitting the gas a little put it in the redline. My new tach works ok at around 1k and idle speed but at 60 mph it shows the engine spinning at 4500 rpms

you know your car

the 1-2 shift probably works just fine but does the engine then rev a bunch and either not go into 3rd or if you keep taking your foot off the gas and trying again it might eventually shift but it's getting worse every time?

that would be the 3-4 clutch and it has to be opened.

Did you send a PM to probuilt or contact their web site? It's worth looking to see if they are willing to make an arrangement. Shipping parts to the UK is a heck of a lot cheaper than shipping a tranny.
