Auto to manual swap

Around how much would it cost to have a shop convert my 1987 Camaro z28 from a 4 speed auto to a five speed manual? This would be with buying a brand new tranny as well.

More $$$ than simply buying a 5spd or 4th gen 6spd to begin with.

Shop wouldn't buy a used trans, so thats at least a Grand there cause they'll probably buy a TKO.

They'll buy all new everything.

You'll have to pay them the labor to modify the trans tunnel, locate a 5spd console, swap in the pedals, drill the Master cylinder hole in the firewall, etc..

Do it yourself, or just buy a different car. No other ways to do it.

I have at least $1300 in my T56 swap and I got a screaming deal on the trans for $200, but paid $500 to have it rebuilt. So thats $700 immediately.

Bought a used clutch/fhywheel for $90, master and slave for $100 I think. Pedals for $25, $110 for crossmember (Hawks LT version), Speedobox converter $80....

You see where I'm going here?

Add in several hours of labor at $90-$120 per hour and you got yourself a very expensive swap.

That's what good newer performance parts can cost. Clutches can be more expensive than that.

Nope, I run a T-56.

Care to show me where you can find these new parts for cheaper?

Maybe then we will see who is high.

A shop is not going to goof around looking for used parts. Plus used parts are just asking for trouble.

Re: Auto to manual swap

The only reason i asked this question was because one of my friends smart @$$ friends told me having a shop drop in a brand spankin new tranny would be cheaper than me rebuilding the current transmission i am working on. And he said that with me rebuilding the tranny myself. I wanted some solid numbers to throw at him, so thanks guys.

Well your 'friend' is clueless. You can rebuild a 700r4 for a few hundred bucks, converting to a 5 speed will cost more that that for just the trans, even if you just use a stock t5. You will spend over 2k for most the parts, used parts, for a t56 swap, and about 3 for a tko since you won't find one used. Then add shop labor which will be over a grand easy.
