Tranny trouble

Hey guys, been having problems with my transmission shifting gears. It does, but it takes longer than usual. This suddenly started happening two days ago, and it was only 2nd coming in late. The problem seemed to go away when warmed up, then it came back, now all gears seem to be coming in late.
Any thoughts? The tranny's fluid is topped off, and is in good condition. The transmission was doing excellent two days ago, then suddenly one morning it started doing this. For the record and in case its important, the weather has been cold. Maybe its nothing related to the issue, but the night after it got cold, the transmission has been doing this.
Any ideas? I'm completely stumped how it went from doing so well to suddenly having these problems literally one day to the other. Again, tranny fluid is good, and the weather has been cold. Thanks for the input.

Re: Tranny trouble

I'm going to assume you have a auto? How many miles? Driven hard?

It could be the clutch packs are giving out. Thats what happened when my tranny went out at 188000 miles - it just dropped 3rd and 4th, couldn't get over 35mph, never slipped before that though lol

Re: Tranny trouble

Yeah its auto, forgot to specify that. I've pretty much babied the car since I got it, once in a while accelerating a bit hard, but nothing exceeding 3,000 rpms. The car has 93,000 miles, got it when it had 91,000.

Re: Tranny trouble

Well after some research, I've been able to narrow it down to what it could be. Either the transmission filter needs replacement, or the modulator does. Of course, it could also be the transmission is on its way out. I'm leaning towards the modulator, though, but I'm gonna change the filter as well. Any idea of where to get the modulator? I've searched for it at autozone and o'reillys and they don't have that part. Any help would be appreciated. The car is my daily driver atm, and the problem caught me at a really bad time. Again, thanks.

Re: Tranny trouble

Replacing the filter would be a good place to start, check the fluid color and all that.

Do you mean the TV booster, I didn't think these have modulators. I'll have to look through my receipts though and see if I can find where I got my rebuild kit, but I'd say you might want to try Summit or try contacting someplace that specializes in rebuilding 700r4s and see if they can get you one.

700r4 does not have a vacuum modulator

Re: Tranny trouble

Try adjusting your TV cable. Proper GM adjustment method is: Push in the little black button near the throttle/shift linkage. Hold in the button and push the actual metal/wire part of the cable toward the driver's firewall.THen go inside the car and floor the gas pedal. You should hear 3 clicks. If it is still shifting too late for you You can try adjusting the cable the opposite way. Just push in the button and move the cable the opposite direction maybe a quarter inch. I wouldn't go to far. Then go for a drive. The car should now shift sooner, but it will shift softer.

Re: Tranny trouble

Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction. I played around with the tv cable and the car is now shifting sooner. Its a little more drivable than before now though 3rd and overdrive come in waay too soon, I guess I gotta play around with it a little more. Still, despite this the transmission still feels odd. Maybe it just needs more adjusting, or maybe its something more serious. I'll find out this weekend.

Re: Tranny trouble

I'm stomped. I got home from work right now and decided to check out the cable some more. When the cable is self adjusted, the car won't even turn on. I have to adjust it to where the transmission shifts sooner, but it stacks 3rd and overdrive as a result. Could the cable be bad? Or has it come loose? I did notice that the throttle is harder to open now, after the self adjustment. Thanks for the help.
