You need to hit the caps (un)lock button B4 you type..
If you haven't, do some quick searching on here and you may find what you need..

well of course you'll need the transmission. you'll need an automatic console trim plate, and you'll have to rewire you reverse lights. i think the starters might even be different.

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

Why would you want to convert a stick to auto? Sticks are really fun to drive!!!
Auto is more consistant and faster if you got a nice stall convertor.

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

You need to hand over your man card and relinquish your nuts to the nearest individual with a standard transmission.

But seriously make sure to get a converter to match your 350

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

With the shifter make sure to get a neutral safety switch and rewire clutch sstart wires and reverse wires to the nuetral safety switch. Obviously need a shifter cable and will need a different torque arm mount. Also you will need to cover the hole in the trans tunnel for the shifter to mount.
It isn't necessarily required but would make sense to swap the auto pedals in.
You will also need a TV cable and something for torque converter lock up.
You should be able to use your crossmember and driveshaft.
Hope this helps some.

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

The 700R4 is a great 4-speed auto transmission. Shifting in traffic gets pretty old no matter how cool the standard shift settup is..especially for old dudes like me. When I updated my 305CID/700R4 I trash-canned the base FB's ECM controlled carb system and went to an Edelbrock 1406 and MSD Mechanical vacuum HEI. Also trashed the 700R4's electrical Converter lockup system and installed a mechanical lockup during rebuild. Make sure the geometry on your carb is correct for the TV cable on the 700R4. You'll probably want to trash the old throttle bracket and install a throttle/TV kickdown/cruise control bracket (universals ~$10). Mount the head of the TV cable sideways on the new bracket (may need to file a small grove) so you can then easily adjust your 700R4 shiftpoints any time you like.....with just a touch of the "D" button on the TV cable head. I love my 700R4..... and I still have my MAN card completely up-to-date.

Your car must be butchered big time!!! The 700R4 is a great tranny but to convert a car from stick to auto is frankly a butcher job like your car is.

Yea I know the feeling. When I was looking for another V8 project it was manual trans or no sale.

I have a friend who got an 86 ta not long after I got mine and he has been kicking his self over getting an auto for a while. He will be going manual soon

I understand how you feel. As I drive where there is alot of stop lights etc it can be aggravating to shift all the time. An auto can be much easier to drive in those situations. For some that can be considered to make it more fun.
I myself, however, prefer a stick shift in a sports car. I prefer a standard trans in any vehicle but most preferably in a sports car. I will not put a standard in my pickup or T Bird because they are much easier to drive with a automatic. To each his or her own.
I bought a T56 to put behind a 350 when I get one ready. Yes that means alot of shifting in stop and go traffic but it isn't my daily driver. (It will be used as my DD when I repaint my truck though).
My wife likes autos w/ bench seats (go figure) but I will not have anything with a bench seat. The TBird has a bench but I have everything (dash, center console, door panels and correct seats and seat belts) to properly swap to buckets.) She can drive a stick though.

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

I happen to know maroz2884 and the reason he asked how to do this swap was because he sold his 84 camaro to get a 91 and he wanted to keep his t56 so he found a cheap 700r4 tranny and did the swap n now he is working on putting the t56 on his other car. So no man cards where lost here.

Re: T-5 TO 700R4 SWAP

Here's the thing.....I've got a T5 five speed car...84 Z, and it's down for a warmed 350...Aluminum PC heads, Hooker competition headers, Cam, dumping the electronics, and going with a Cliff Ruggles and me built Qjet. It won't be a rocket, but it will definitely toast the stock version. My T5 hated being shifted quick, or hard, and flat wouldn't go into 5th on a full throttle charge. The clutch needs to be replaced, and I've priced the parts needed to beef up the T5, including a GForce case, shifter with stops, and a rebuild on the NWC box. Pretty pricy, and based on what I've been hearing, no guarantee that it'll last, and I'll probably jeapordize the life of my 3.73 posi rear as well. I am not planning on racing my car, but I'd like to be able to punch it on the on ramp with out fear. Once this ride is back on the road, I just want to drive it, and enjoy it. And, I'm not made out of money. Looks to me like a 700R4 would be much less of a bite out of the parts bin, and the gas money than the HD version of the 5 speed set-up......No? What I'd like to know, and I have poked around on here with the search engine, is how to do that swap and make it basically all mechanical, and TV operated, and adjustable, and which is the best bang for the buck shifter. If you have the Auto version, and it is a good to go set up, including trans, and would like to have the T5 kit complete, I'd consider the trade if you live anywhere near Dallas.
