clutch replacement, tips for 1st timers
So, I just did a clutch replacement in the car. It was my first time doing a clutch of any kind. I have however pulled many a automatic tranny including the AWD 4L65e in the truck 3 times. So I figured Id post up some things for others like me, who are researching a clutch replacement. First, make sure you have the right parts, after getting my tranny out I found the pressure plate in the box was WRONG. Had to take a trip to the parts store to swap it. Anyway, the inside of the car youll need to disconnect the pedal pushrod to the hydraulic stysem. Then, youll need to disassemble the center console to get the shifter out. When sliding the tranny out of the bellhousing the shifter will catch on the floor pan and stop you dead in your tracks. Guess how i found out
, so go ahead and do it before you get under the car. Under the car at the rear youll need to disconnect and remove the driveshaft, have a drain pan ready. Then at the tail of the tranny youll need to disconnect the torque arm, mine had very slight upward pressure on it and it rested against the floor pan when unbolted. Now disconnect the wire running to the drivers side of the tranny and the speedo cable. Next, I unbolted the 4 bolts holding the tranny to the bellhousing. Shes not that heavy (until, you have to hold it there waiting for a buddy to unbolt the shifter
). Then youll have to remove the slave cylinder and set it to the side, I didnt remove the line just the bolts. Now you can get to the mission at hand. There are 4 bolts that come in from the front of the car to hold on the dust shield. I did not remove the starter, I just let the shield hang on the starter. Now you can remove the bellhousing. Youll notice the throwout bearing is there on the clutch fork. Now go ahead and remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. That is pretty much all that is involved. Not a terible job over all, its nice to have a friend there to help but could be tackled by one man easily. Hope this helps anyone getting ready to replace their clutch. Obviously this is not ment to be a "How to", but simply a few tips for the inexperienced like myself.
