Nope. Just put it in overdrive. Drive (or 3rd gear) would be ok if you were maybe driving for an extended period of time uphill like in the mountains.

The "overdrive" on these trans is really just a 4th gear not a separate range applied to some or all the gears. So, would you drive a manual around without using 4th if it was the appropriate gear to be in? Let the trans do the work and thinking. Unless you want to play of course.

base 91 my last manuel car hit the rev limiter at 110 mph an 140 mph in 4th . yes i did drive around in 3erd at in town an back roads . overdrive in a 700r4 is .70 . drive is 1.00 . the same ratio a turbo 400 has . overdrive is just that for full economy . it's not needed at less than highway speeds . plus it makes the car a slug when you do try to acceerate at lower speeds . an you'll notice it shifts up an down alot at the slower speeds . i realize not everybody wants max turque an power so it's all how you wanna drive . but it won't hurt it running it like tho .hell i run around town in 2nd gear alot cuzz thats the power range at 25-45 mph . just how i drive but my car breaks the rear loose at 35 mph also driving like that .

I drive around in drive on country roads.those roads are windy and hilly and if I leave it in od it constantly up and down shifts.there's one uphill sharp s curve the transmission really doesn't like.at lest in drive the torque converter locks up.

The reason OD is not to be used is to avoid burning up the clutches or band that applies for that gear.
Based on an overdrive ratio (.70:1 or anything less than 1:1), a driveshaft has more mechanical leverage than the input shaft. Anything higher than 1:1 means the input has more leverage than the output.
So, if the trans. is being worked hard and has a lot of heat, holding 3 is better than letting a high-load, low-pressure shift happen. Examples are as hills or any condition where the trans. is hunting between 3 and 4, Towing a lot of weight etc.
Towing in 4th with a moderate load is generally fine if throttle is steady and on level ground so the trans. won't hunt between 3 and 4.

Re: Which D [D] to drive around in?
i have a question the purtans to the subject . is it normal for a 700r4 to be able to manual hold an gear ( 1-3) till redline ? i've had other autos in the past an they would shift even if you left the gear shifter in first ?

Re: Which D [D] to drive around in?
Should hold whatever gear u put the shifter in unless the linkage/cable is messed up as in hooking up a megashifter and never lining out the cable properly

Re: Which D [D] to drive around in?
I have another question. When im driving and the tranny shifts to second, for some reason it feels like my car losses power. Is this supposed to happen because it doesn't feel right.
