Hi all,

I am going to be changing my rear gear ratio from stock 2.73 to 3.42. I'm going to use my 2 series carrier and install the 3.42 ring gear onto it with a spacer. My question is, do I need to change my 2.73 pinion gear as well? Do all pinion gears work with any ring gear, as long as they have correct spacing? Also, is there any reason the axles would need to be changed when going from 2.73 to 3.42? I am new to this, so thanks for the help.

 

Ring and pinion gears are always matched sets you can not interchange them with any other gear even if its the same ratio. You must change both.

Axles are not affected.

Also, I strongly recommend getting a 3 series differential or a special thick 3.42 gear that is made to fit the 2 series differential. Using a ring gear spacer in the 7.5 rear end is a very bad idea.
