Help please! No gears...
Hi, this is probably going to sound really thick, but I am not sure what I should be looking for.
I got in the car and started her up. I have a 1987 IROCz with a 700R4 trans attached to a 5.0l TPI. I selected gear but instead of a gear the lever just flops from R to 1 with no feeling at all. I think I may have a snapped cable or something? Park works fine.
What i would like is an idiots guide to getting it fixed - what do i need to look for inside/outside the car? I am stuck on the top floor of the works multi storey car park. If I take a new cable to work with me and take a jack to work with me what other tools am I likely to need?
Any help appreciated!

Sounds like your shift cable broke.
I'd take jack stands, wheel chocks, and a jack (whatever you need to be able to safely get under the car, along with screw drivers, torx heads, various sockets, etc. You'll have to take apart the top of the center console to get to the shifter cable. It's not a crazy hard thing to replace.
these links should help:

Re: Help please! No gears...
Thank you so much, I have a week to wait for the new cable to get here, so it gives me plenty of time to get the bits to where I work and take the old one out. Hopefully the weather will play ball too.

Yup; pretty common sort of thing to break.
Cars that have clutch cables are even worse about breaking those.
I was just over in your vicinity acoupla weeks ago. Coventry, Birmingham, London, York, Salisbury, ... lots of flooded rivers.
