Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

Hey folks -

I have a car I'm building from scratch that didn't have anything (just a rolling chassis).

This '88 was originally a manual, and I couldn't afford to do a T56, so I went to a 700R4 auto trans.

I'm just about done buttoning things up, but I don't know where the front part of the stock torque arm connects. Is it supposed to connect to the transmission? If so, and I'm using the original one from the manual transmission, do I need a different one?

Thanks, guys...

Yes.

No. IIRC, however, the torque arm mount is different between auto and manual.

Here we good:

Yes, auto and manual are different mounts.
Is the 700r4 from an f body ? If not, it won't have any place to mount the torque arm.

In which you would need a aftermarket cross member with the torque arm bracket made on it.....

Re: Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

Hmm... I hope I'm not in trouble here.

I originally had no engine, no trans, just a body and four wheels.

I built up the engine for an auto trans, and bought a 700R4 from craigslist (with the assumption that I'd rebuild it). I never knew or thought about the trans having to be from a Camaro. :-(

In any case, I realize now that I was missing the torque arm bracket for the trans. I just ordered one from ebay that is for both a 700R4 and third gen Camaros. Hopefully, it will bolt up to the existing 700R4. If not, am I left with having to get a new transmission from a third-gen Camaro?

Thanks for your help, everyone!

No, If your tail housing doesn't have the provisions for the torque arm mount bracket you can get a cross member such as this to use the trans you've got......

Re: Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

This is great info for those of us switching from auto to manual trans or vice/versa as in this thread.

The T56, who is it made by? I heard it can handle more torque from a modified engine.

Re: Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

If you have the tail on the left and want to trade me for the one in the middle (allows stock third gen torque arm bracket to bolt-up) PM me:

The T56 was originally a Borg Warner design, first introduced in the '92 Viper, then '93 F-bodies. Tremec bought their light duty line in the 90s.

So which one of those three images shows the one I need for my Camaro?

Re: Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

the middle one.

if it doesn't look like that then you can buy a trans crossmember with a torque arm mount built in. Problem solved. no need to by another trans or swap tail housings.

Re: Dumb question: Where does torque arm connect?

I think I might be in luck. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing 3 horizontal bolt holes.
I'll check when I get home later on.

Follow up question:
I can confirm that I have the right transmission, and my bracket from ebay just arrived, and it appears to be correct for both my transmission and my torque arm.

My bracket doesn't appear to have the bolts, however (other than the LONG one in the middle). Anyone know what size/thread pitch I need to get at the hardware store?

Also - it looks like the bracket needs to be on the transmission BEFORE the trans is in place, as I can't seem to figure out how to get the bracket on without doing that. That seems weird that I would have take out the trans to put on the bracket, however. Ideas?

Thanks!
J
