1985 z28 all stock I passed two cars yesterday got up to about 85 mph and it redlined I pulled over and put it in park, shut it off and crunk it back up and my shifter was moving freely I checked the linkage and apparently the little plastic piece holding it together isn't holding so I put two zip ties on it and I got it back in gear but the car won't shift to third it's almost like its slipping into neutral and when I put it in drive or any other lower gear it won't lock in like the shifter will easily slide back to neutral and only then will the button on my shifter pop up. I need help fast because this is my daily driver and also I love this car I can't let her sit up so please please let me know what I need to dooooo

 

It has plenty of transmission fluid btw

 

Well, when you crunked it back up and discovered your shifter was flopping a round, to me it sounds like you need to get the new cable.

Also, if you put the shifter down (or not) into 2nd when you were passing the cars, it's possible you have a bit of crud stuck in the valvebody not letting the valve move freely and it's stuck in 2nd

Lmao I know yeah I cranked it up started it up blah blah lol I turned it on with the key and it ignited lol wtf but yeah the plastic piece isn't locking on so I zip tied it to hold. It just won't shift to third. Please tell me what I need to do to fix it I've got it jacked up right now and I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm very good with directions so if its an easy fix ill do it right now I really don't want to drive my impala I want my old school

 

It's an automatic btw and I didn't shift down to second at 70 mph that would be stupid

By the sounds of it, you need a Service Manual. It's a 700R4

Just found a line all torn up hooking to the back of the trans.

 

 

I'm starting to think more and more that the governor is the problem.

 

Since it feels like neutral when the trans attempts to shift to third, the 3/4 clutch packs are gone. Need a rebuild, weakest point of the 700R4 transmission are those.
