4th gen posi in late 3rd gen (28 spline)?

I just picked up a 28 spline axle setup out of a 90 camaro for 100 bucks....but its open

Can i run a posi unit out of a 4th gen? If so what years should i look for...the axle has 3.23 gears now.

Thanks in advance!

What you really want is a 99-02 Torsen posi out of a Trans Am or SS Camaro, they don't have any clutches to wear out. I have one in my car & I love it.

Same. Very nice unit. Bolts right into the 3rd gen rear.

And it doesn't require any special additives, which is a plus

Well it doesn't exactly bolt in. There is shimming to be done.

Re: 4th gen posi in late 3rd gen (28 spline)?

when I got my 99 it had the torsen, argued with gm cause was misinformed by dealer about options, so in the end I got the optional auburn posi and special rear end cover option. I will tell you this, the difference you feel everything being the same, it went from torsen (felt like walking on icy road) to auburn (felt like cat clawing on carpet to get away from a dog) I can see how people don't want the maintenance of auburn, but I would choose it over any, the clutch rebuilding in future, and special additive is so worth it compared to torsen. I no matter what use gm posi lube, seems better than the rest.

It's good that the Auburn worked well for you, but it's actually one of, if not the worst differential available. I wouldn't put one in my car if it was free and someone paid me to put it in. I've had too many bad experiences with the Auburn in customer's cars and I will not install one anymore, even if that's what the customer wants. The last customer that came in and wanted an Auburn ended up with an Eaton Posi. That was not their choice, but mine. I am tired of them coming back for warranty work and complete rear end rebuilds, so no more Auburns from my shop.

I'm pretty surprised to hear that, as I did a lot of research before I bought mine & I've honestly never read a complaint about a torsen LSD. I've had mine in a year & the only time my car has been lacking traction was in reverse, because the torsen is a one way LSD, lol.
