Signaling N neutral

Hi all

Is there a simple way to detect you put the gear in N mode?

That's, for example, if I want to light a LED or a buzzer, when I put N to avoid me to accidentally put the R while the car is moving forward.

THANKS

Re: Signaling N neutral

Could tie onto the neutral saftey wiring at the shifter or pedals.
or just don't put the shifter into reverse when your moving, I don't see why this problem would cone up? You have to press the button on the shifter to get into reverse from drive or neutral anyway.

Re: Signaling N neutral

I have this particular, which I consider nice, way of driving: when I know I'll have to stop soon (which is frequent in Italy streets), instead of running and then brake just before, I put in N and let the car go forward by inertia.
This allow me to:
- save gas
- save brakes (because I have to start stop from a lower speed)
- save transmission, because I avoid it to shift from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1.

In any case, I consider a usefull advice knowing when you are in N.

What is the neutral saftey wiring?

thanks!

Re: Signaling N neutral

You know your car is in neutral when the shifter is in the neutral position...

Neutral safety switch doesn't have any kind of signal wire for neutral, it simply energizes the starter wires when it detects the gear selector is either in PARK or NEUTRAL. To get any kind of neutral only light, you'd probably have to figure out how to install some sort of micro-switch on the shifter mechanism.

Sounds like someone bypassed the neutral safety switch. Get some sort of shop manual, you'll need it if you bought someone else's old project car.

Your method doesn't quite make sense.

- Your car will idle higher in N than in gear, so you'll burn more gas coasting/sitting in N than in gear.
- An automatic transmission doesn't cycle through each gear when slowing down, It'll stay in (over) drive until you stop, then it shifts into 1st.
- Also, as has been said before, with an automatic shifter you can throw it from R to D without hitting the button, but if you just slide from D to R it will stop you in N because in order to shift from N to R the button must be pressed.

hope that helps.
