manual or auto?

Ok guys...i have a 91 RS auto and every one at my high school gives me a lot of crap b/c it is auto. It is rebuilt with vette servo, transgo shift kit, and 2500 TC. Which is truly faster in E.T.'s my moded auto or a manual transmission. some time diffreneces would help. thanx

Theoretically a manual is faster because there's no slippage of the clutch like in a torque converter.

An automatic can be much more consistant since it can shift more quickly than a manual.

A manual tranny is also a lot lighter than an automatic even adding in the weight of the flywheel and clutch. A lighter vehicle is faster.

You already have the mods required to help your tranny. Don't get suckered in to having to change it because someone doesn't like an auto.

I just want to smack people who say "auto? can't be fast" The fastest cars I've seen around my way are all auto. You'll never miss a gear and you'll be way more consistant.

manual or auto?

aren't all those funny drag cars auto. when they show the insides it looks like they have ratchet shifters like the B&M but i am not sure. The only advantage i see manual over auto is that it is lighter and you can pop the clutche off the starting line. If you had stock camaro with t-56 with a good driver VS a 700R4 with all the stuff i have done to mine who would win and by about hoiw much?

Funny cars and dragsters use direct drive with a multiple clutch system. No transmissions are used any more.

Cars like Pro Stock use a 5 speed Lenco transmission. Each lever you see engages the next gear. They only use the clutch to start and stop the car. NHRA rules prevent them from using any kind of automatic tranny.

If you want to know who would win then go out to a track and race. No two cars are the same so it doesn't matter what transmission you use. A car that has a 700R4 in it won't have the same rear end gearing as the manual since the trannys are geared differently. If properly setup each car should run the same.

manual or auto

Almost every camaro in my Camaro magazines are automatic so thats the reason i bought one. A couple ppl had told me to get an automatic then have it rebuilt and do the shift kit etc.. They said it would be faster then a manual tranny unless the person driving is very experienced. And i doubt many of the high schools are my school can speed shift like a pro. Manuals are way more fun to drive but i thiubnk i like my automatic, especially in the san diego traffic

Manual = fun and win lights (or hazards if you street race) if you can drive. You will loose a lot if you cant drive.

Auto = everyday Joe (everybody runs an automatic). Consistency. Boring (to me at least). Softer on drivetrain parts (harder if you run a tranny brake, but still softer than a manual).

Personally, I kinda like automatics, until they start burning up. I prefer manuals (I'm a driver, trust me!). Both of them suck if you break something.

There arent many strong manuals out here except for Richmond 5 and 6 speeds, Tremec TKO's and T56's. Ive seen a 4th gen break a T56 and set off both airbags. I've never personally witnessed anyone break a Richmond (5 or 6), nor a Tremec TKO. Ive seen PLENTY of T5's break, explode, barf, puke, fart, cry, spit, blow chunks, munch on their own internals, etc.

The Automatics enjoy some strength advantage when modified. I think the strongest OD automatic (non- electric) out there right now is the YANK "4L70". The strongest OD tranny PERIOD is the 4L80E. The strongest 3 speed auto is the TH400 (of course) with the TH35o in a close second. And to hell with Powerglides in a daily driver car!

Umm... I dont like 700r4's and there killer 1-2 shift RPM drop!

Just my opinion! NO FLAMES PLEASE!
