saginaw in a 92 rs

i have a 1992 camaro rs 5spd. Third and fourth gear dont like me very well as it grinds going into those 2 gears. I t has the not so awesome t5 5 spd that everyone tells me to ditch and get a t56. i would but im not overflowing with money right now if you feel my drift. i have a friend that races late models on pavement and has a built saginaw he is giving me a DEAL on. Besides losing 2 gears (3spd) is it worth doing? will the t5 bell housing work? what about the fly wheel and clutch? has anyone tried this or seen this before?

Re: saginaw in a 92 rs

The clutch disk will not work. A saginaw is 10 spline vs I think 26 for the t5. You will lose your torque arm mount on the tail shaft so you will need to buy a different cross member that relocates the arm. I think the drive shaft length will be different as well. Bellhousing should work. Also the t5 shifter is somewhere around 3 inches further back then the saginaw.

Re: saginaw in a 92 rs

You don't want a Saginaw. Free or otherwise.

If I couldn't avoid one being on my property (like, let's say, one day, it just started raining Saginaws) I would pay somebody to come haul it off. IOW, it has NEGATIVE value... it would devalue my property by being on it.

Why not just fix the 3 & 4 grind?

Usually that's the pilot bushing/bearing.

Really? Just the pilot bushing? need to replace the clutch anyway, guess i could do the clutch, pilot bushing, and see if it goes away.

Re: saginaw in a 92 rs

What does yours look like? When was the last time you put one in?

Why would you want Frod gear ratios?

Had the car a few months. Wasn't running when I got it. Running now, and having problems with trans.

Re: saginaw in a 92 rs

The Ford case & third gen GM case are different patterns up front where they bolt to the bellhousing.

Then, the Ford V8 ratios have maindrive & countershaft gears that have no "easy bolt in maindrive replacement" due to tooth count.

You have one of the best T5s made, except it didn't get a tapered mainshaft pilot bearing. Fix it. Save up for a T56. Really.
