No transmission cooler

If your coolant temp never goes over 200, using the radiator to cool the trans is perfectly fine right?

I have a B&M transmission cooler, but I'm thinking of removing it to make room to go back to a front mount intercooler.

Re: No transmission cooler

you would have to measure the trans temp to determine if you need one or not.

Hrmm. That's not a bad idea, I could probably run a sender to my ECU.

What's acceptable fluid temp?

Whats the trans temp. Builder told me around 160-180 is ok but lower is better. Dex 3 is not dex 6.

No idea. I'll have to pick up a sender.

Re: No transmission cooler

Small high stall convertor will add alot of heat. I have used the long/trucool units with sucess. They are basically the B&M units. The one i always use is the 11×8×1.5. I use the one with the npt 1/2 thread. The regular trans coolers are setup inside so that as the fluid gets hotter amd thinner it gets through the lower passages in the cooler. The npt one is not setup this way. If you interested in the B&M design I know a few places where you can get the cooler real cheap vs the B&M labeled brand.

I have a big 10x12 B&M cooler right now, but I needed to remove it for my intercooler. I could probably mount it on the bottom of the air dam, but I doubt it would shed much heat. Maybe I should do it anyway as a second pass after the radiator?

Everything is -6AN

Re: No transmission cooler

I like the chart on this website. 195 or cooler is good.

Re: No transmission cooler

So I ran the trans into the radiator, out the radiator into the B&M plate cooler, then return to the trans.

Re: No transmission cooler

Joe just had cpt build me a awesome 4l60e trans and he told me the same routing. To put it in perspective. My 07 tahoe has the trans temp in the dash usually trans temp was at 185 -190 going just through radiator. Now this is on a truck that the engine temp is always 210. I just put a b@m 11x8x1.5 thick cooler. Now temp only gets to 165 on the hottest days (95+). I think you are more than ok. With the same setup on my camaro no ac condensor which does make a big difference the temp never got over 140.

Ahh.. Hopefully all will work out. If not, I'll figure something out.

Who is CPT ?

Nice! I probably should have went 4l60e instead of TH350 but.. I was being silly.

I definitely went off the rails building this car, and now with 23k in receipts and 4 years on/off working on it I've got to finish it. Didn't help that I changed direction about 5 times.

Re: No transmission cooler

This is where I mounted mine, made a little air scoop to aid cooling. Its the smaller B&M, using the stock cooler too.

Then grafted a pod on the pillar trim, for the gauge.Temp runs about the same as coolant (190-210).

where is the temp sensor? that is still running too hot in my opinion.

Re: No transmission cooler

Sensor is on the trans case, in the diag/test port.It peaks at that temp & takes a while to get there.I dont think thats too hot though.

That is too hot. It wont dissapate heat there. If your sitting there is no airflow across it. Its best to put it 1/2 inch from ac condensor if you have one or 1/ 2 inch from radiator. If you can get a small spal fan on the back of that you will be ok. I would worst case scenerio be at 180 max under acceleration. Your not even driving. When your convertor is slipping if I assume you have a decent stall thats where all your heat will be. If you decide to move it and have dual fans put it in front of the primary one.

Re: No transmission cooler

It runs about 160-175 on the fwy & takes forever to get there. That pic was taken after i returned from some "spirited" driving thru local cayons w/ a couple buddies.

I have a small 5" fan from an old R6 that i though would be perfect for this.Just havent bothered making a go at it.Its there cause there is a fan in front of the condensor already that i have no desire to move.

Re: No transmission cooler

Either way you dont want the temp there after spirited driving. The cooler the better. Under 180. You drove it hard and then you get stuck in traffic just say. There is no air flow across that cooler unless your moving. That why in front of radiator is best spot. Or in your case put a fan on it with a temp probe to switch it on and off.
