Trans Wont go into park.

My trans wont go into park. Its as if the cable is not long enough. I disconnected the shift cable and put the selector on park. Then I put the trans in park with the lever. Then I tried hooking the cable back up and it barely reaches the lever. Is the cable to short? I'm gonna try to notch the selector maybe that will work. Let me know what could be the problem.

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

It could be getting into a bind between the shifter and the column(yes. . .they're connected).

Between the key and the dash on the column is a sleeve(?) which, if you'll notice, TURNS when you shift from park to the various gears and back. (I'm not certain but I believe that's so these columns can be used in column shift cars with minimal modification. . .).

Try tapping or GENTLY rotating that sleeve with your hand while you try to shift into park. It should free up the bind.

My shift cable got a kink or something in it at one point and I had to do this a few times before it worked itself out.

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

Really ? I'll check. If the selector would move up a bit more it would go into park. I know if I disconnect the cable from the shifter and push up on the cable it would go into park but hmmm. I'm thinking the cable might be too short. Its not the original shift cable btw.

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

Well I cant figure this out. Before I did my fluid and filter change it worked. Not exactly but it went into park. Before I would put it in park and then the car would roll a bit and then go into park, You could feel it catch the park. But now it just stays between park and reverse. I tried disconnecting the cable from the shifter/selector and pushing the cable up towards park but still doesn't go into park. The only way I can get it to go into park is if I go down to the lever and push it towards park. What could be the problem? I'm thinking something is wrong with the lever.

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

I was looking at my book and was wondering if I can adjust the shift lever to be more towards the back that way It would go into park?

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

Well I had a spare cable and put it on and it works now. The cable I had on there was mickey moused together and was shorter. I picked that one up at the junkyard when the one before that snapped.

Re: Trans Wont go into park.

Yeah good thing I picked up two at the jy a while back. I like to stock up on parts. Especially small parts that fit in my pocket and are free.
