Spider gear removal

Spider gear removal
Hello, I am new to this forum and did not see any answers on this in the forums. I have a 10 bolt 7 5/8 limited slip differential. My top spider gear needs replaced. All other gears and bearings are good so I do not need a rebuild. I am wanting to know if I am able to remove the spider gear without removing the carrier. I know on some open carriers you can just remove the hardened pin and just spin the gears until the spider falls out. I am unable to spin mine I guess because of the clutch plates. Does anyone know of a trick or method of how to remove without pulling the carrier?

If you have clutch plates in the carrier then you dont have an open diff. Other than that with the pin out and axles they should just fall out.

I do not have an open but I am wanting to know if I am able to turn the gears inside the carrier to get the spider gear out, same way you can on an open.

drum or disc on that rear? If drum I recommend swapping for a 4th gen 98 up v8 rear

Re: Spider gear removal
I'm assuming that this is an Auburn differential since that is what was factory installed. There will be 5 springs in the center with 2 preload plates. You will not be able to get the gears out without removing the springs and plates, and that is not easy with the differential in the housing. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but it will be much easier with it out of the housing.

Re: Spider gear removal
If your carrier is an Auburn then it is now garbage. (even more so now than while the gear was intact) Throw it away and get something else.
Post a photo and we can be more definitive about it.
