T56 Magnum Shifter

T56 Magnum Shifter
I've tried searching but I can't seem to find the answer. I have an '88 IROC, and i'm considering using a T56 Magnum with my LS swap. I know the 4th gen T56's shifter location is pretty dead on, but what about the magnum? I guess what my my question is, how much surgery is involved trying to fit a T56 magnum in a third gen camaro? Any information would be helpful.
Thanks alot!

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
The 4th gen shifter position (LT1 T56) is a little behind the 3rd gen T5 shifter position.
The Magnum rear shifter position (GM T56 Magnum w/ LS1 4th gen bellhousing) is a little forward of the 4th gen shifter position.
If you're rocking a T5, it will be close.
If you're starting with an auto, it won't be a challenge.

My magnum (with magnum tailhousing) is in and it is almost perfect fit (T5 car). I will have to trim a little on the sides but overall no major surgery. I'll see if I can get a picture.

A little late to the game here, this is a project I'm about to start since I went with a man-pedal instead of a 4L80e. Were you able to get those photos? Also, what shifter to get is my question? MGW seems like one of the ones the 4th gen guys like.

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
I totally forgot. Ill see what I have on my phone tonight. As for shifter, if you use the fbody tailhousing your options are plenty. I have the 6 bolt stock tremec shifter and its rather sloppy. The throw pushes it into the ash tray area so I had to make a make shift shifter plate.

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
Here is a pic. In this pic the opening is stock T5 and you can see how the stock Tremec tail housing puts the shifter forward. It drives fine for me but I would eventually want it to be more rearward so I can use the stock ash tray bin. Two of the shifter holes are under the tunnel and are not accessible from the top. I drilled two small holes in the floor should I even need to remove it. If you go with f-body tail housing, you won't have to worry about this, or 6 bolt shifters.

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
Old thread bump sorry.
I wanted to know what 6 bolt shifter and what offset some of you have went with for the non F magnum? I bought my GM ls swap magnum for another project but ended up not using it. Going to put it in my 88 Camaro. Car was originally v6 auto. Would like shifter location as close to stock as I can get it. 👍🏼

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
There isn't much you can do to get it in the stock location. Mine is too far forward and required me to modify the center console shifter plate. I might be able to swap handles that angles the shifter handle rearward. Alan91z was able to get his in a more stock location.

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
if I had the measurement from bell housing face to the stock T5 shifter would help a lot. Haven’t had luck finding it yet. Then I could figure out what offset adapter/shifter i need to get it close. I don’t care about the angle the stock shifters have. Just looking to get close. I know the difference between magnum and magnum F. The F is 2.8” further back
american power train white lightning shifter is a option with their 2.75” offset adapter. Would get it close to the F
just wondering what others have used.

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
so a 1” rear offset would get if super close if thats
correct. Think i can let .1” slide 😁

Re: T56 Magnum Shifter
3rd gen F-Bodys angled theT5 transmission towards the driver's side. While the T56/Magnum was straight up on shifter location. The angle helped with shifter position in the center console.
