Soooo the 3.27 9-Bolt is gettin a little old, but I'm not quite ready to drop the cash for a proper 12 bolt/s60/8.8 etc. etc. -also, I wanted to "try" out a 3.42 with my low rev'ing 383 TPI. I may go back down to a 3.27/23 or may keep 3.42 depending on how I like this one. ...that's another discussion for another day. In the meantime, I picked up this drum 10 bolt with a fresh 4th gen torsen diff and a 3.42 for a couple hundred bucks and figured it was a quick cheap way to try a 3.42 and maybe gain a few more years before buying another rear. ....figured some new paint and some Ed Miller drum to disc plates and I'd be good to go on the cheap! ....but I can't do anything half ***, sooooo new everything. NOT the financial best idea for sure. POR15, new calipers, rotors, brake lines, girdle, sway bar bushings etc. etc! ...almost ready to roll. In the meantime, here are a few glamour shots almost bolted in.
Nice... should last a while on the street... I have a TPI 305 with bolt on mods and did upgrade parts on my 10 bolt, but again, I don't plan to drag race it / not use drag slicks, etc... Kept it at 3.42 with an Eaton TruTrac, i got an LPW cover, and the kit that welds bars to "reinforce" it....
The brakes on my old one were acting up, so all that redone too... much nicer now
Have since sold the red Spohn torque arm and replaced it with a black UMI one...
Great work. My old 26 spline 10 bolt is about worn i need to be thinking of upgrading to 28 spline torsen as well. Looks great under there I've liked everything you've done with that car.

I have never seen a cover like yours that had those extra bars. What is the theory behind them?
I'm in the process of doing the same thing. My 85 has a drum rear in it now. My buddy gave me the old rear from his 91 1LE car. I bought a Torsen posi unit for it. I rebuilt my calipers and painted everything red like you. I got new rotors and pads and all new bearings for the rear. Mine also has the 3.42 gears. Mine isn't near as pretty as yours but will be much nicer than the drum rear under it now.
Very nice. You'll definitely feel the 3.42. And after all of that work, having done such a great job, I suspect you'll be happy with it and probably won't consider changing it anytime in the near future.
That was your car I saw posted on the UMI instagram page lol
haha...yep.
Full Monte, yours looks just fine! I wanted the girdle for a little extra strength, and I needed new lines as I wanted to sell my old 9 bolt with lines for whoever buys it. They were only $30 from Hawk's. ....wouldn't take much to make yours as pretty, and short of the girdle, it's every bit as functional.

Im not as concerned with getting it perfect. My car is just gonna be a weekend warrior/ autocross car. I saw yours on UMI’s Instagram too. I’m friends with the owner of UMI and live 10 min from their shop. I have a couple UMI pieces for my car and more to come.

How smooth of a housing did each of you start with? Most of my donors up here are pretty crusty.

Mine was pretty crusty. I degreased really good and scraped the heavy stuff off.i used Extend rust sealer first then some Caterpillar paint that will stick to anything. My car is no show car so as long as I can’t see rust I’m happy.

That's cool! They gave me some awesome customer service way back and I've pretty much been a fan ever since. I have pretty much everything I need from their catalog. Don't feel I need tubular A arms....bought caster camber plates before they made 'em, and their STB brace doesn't fit SLP runners. ...well I guess their lowering panhard relo kit too. Ok ok, so I have over HALF of their thirdgen offerings!!!

Mine was covered in grease and grime, but structurally it was fine. Took a few spray bottles of purple power but I got 'er done. ...then POR15 makes everything happy. I didn't top coat as it'll never see sun.

Good to know. And thanks for mentioning the top-coat. I was wondering about that.
the little 7.5 will hold up to most street fun as long as you dont put sticky tires on them if you do its usually a short matter of time when I was building my 87 I found a 91-92 disc rear and added torsen and reinforced cover and its held up well for me and my son Full monty that sure is Purty!
