Anyone?
I've checked the fluid today and is not cherry red anymore...it's kinda pink but still clear and transparent.

Fluid il clear but left some black stuff around the rag

Low reverse clutch pack is responsible for engine breaking. Might have an issue there.

Low reverse clutch pack is responsible for engine breaking. Might have an issue there. Did you rebuild it yourself?

Re: 700r4 Lost 1st Gear Engine Braking

you need to pull out the shift kit and find the problem you created.

Re: 700r4 Lost 1st Gear Engine Braking

When my 700 did that, (no engine braking in manual 1st) it was the low/reverse sprag. It's the one way clutch that provides engine braking in manual 1st. Might also explain the reverse issue you're having. They break. Mine failed right after a rebuild and shift kit install. Could have been my driving habits. Could have been poor assembly. After another rebuild, that trans lasted almost forever.

Forward Sprag

EDIT: Didn't see that this thread was from April. Hope the OP has it figured out.

Re: 700r4 Lost 1st Gear Engine Braking

If you are having problems now with it. It sounds like you have lost the low reverse clutch pack. When you have it apart, I will give you some help as to how to prevent this from happening again. Was the valve body (since this is a 1987 unit) the first design GM or second design GM valve body?

Re: 700r4 Lost 1st Gear Engine Braking

I solved the problem:
Added a bottle of Lucas Trans Slip fix, installed a Corvette Servo and now it shifts perfect with engine braking in all the gears

Lucas Trans Slip fix is a very bad idea...
