FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
I just picked up tranny. And the rebuilder. Told me to just use type f transmission fluid.
he as rebuilt tyranny’s for 35 years. Super reputable tranny builder. Rebuilds for a lot of hot rods. Anyway I ask again. He said type f. I think he was losing is mind. I’m asking y’alls thoughts on this.
He did upgrade transmission considerably.

Re: FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
Type F oil was designed for when they were using Asbestos in the clutches. With paper type clutches (since 1978) you use Dexron type oil. If you want firmer shifts, you modify the circuitry, feed hole sizes, servos, accumulators, line pressure and line rise, etc., not using the wrong oil. Type F makes the shifts firmer by allowing the clutches to slip more then apply at the end of the shift to give the firmer shift feel. Dexron type oil has the clutches starting to apply earlier in the shift for a smoother apply. This will make the transmission last longer. According to Borg Warner, type F is a better "static clutch" (neutral to drive) holding apply oil, however type F has a lower "dynamic clutch" apply (shifting clutch) holding ability.

I did not say it would not work. There is a better oil that was designed for the type of paper clutches being used. Borg Warner, Raybestos, Alto and others that make these type of paper clutches have never recommended type F.

I called the old man back.the transmission rebuilder. He said. Dan. Why are you questioning me. I said cause your getting purity old. And I thought maybe you where losing it. He found that super amusing. Laughed and laughed. I have known this man for 35+ years. First time I have ever heard him laugh. He basically said shut the **** up and use type F. And hung up. After reading the difference. I understand now.

The amount of craft experience on this particular forum. Is extremely high. And the reason I asked. Was in the original post. Transmission builder is getting some age on him. And I wanted some real world advise. From some of the smartest (random forum poster).

Re: FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
Nobody here but ProBuilt builds transmissions for a living. He would be the one to give you the best answer. That said. My builder specifies mercon 3. Nothing else. Most here will give you that same answer. Can you use what you are? Sure. But the simple fact of you coming here second guessing your builders advice says your not 100% confident in his answer. If you used mercon 3 I'm sure it would not be detrimental. Either way it's your choice.

Re: FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
I have a 92 Ligenfelter built 700R4 designed for their stage three 383 build (car was built in 92 immediately after purchase), and has had type F it's entire life. I bought it from the original owner and put it in my 86 Trans Am with Amsoil Super Shift - which is basically synthetic Type F from what I understand. Works excellent. I've had the pan off multiple times and never any clutch material or anything on the magnet. It's really a very sweet transmission. Designed to handle 550 HP is what I'm told. It has excellent part throttle shifts and firm full throttle shifts.

But that's just me; good luck with the longevity of your transmission in the future.

Re: FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
I still don't follow. If you don't trust your trans builder's knowledge/experience/recommendations, I question why you'd ever have him build your transmission in the first place. He's the guy who has to stand behind his work, not anyone here telling you otherwise.
But that's just me; good luck with the longevity of your transmission in the future.

I used type F. It’s already installed. Runs good time will tell about the type F. Longevity I drive the car 300 miles a year max. So it may be a longtime on the longevity answer.

Re: FRESH REBUILT 700 FLUID SUGGESTIONS
"PRO Built" what is your opinion on "Lube Guard" transmission fluid supplement? I heard decades ago, it supplements for the Whale Oil that was removed from ATF, pursuit to the international whaling ban.
FWIW I have used it for decades, changing the Fluid and filter, on all my vehicles, every 30,000 miles. They have 200,000-300,000 mile without trans problems.
What about these new 8-10 speed At's?

[QUOTE=Dan Baker;6316244]I don’t trust anyone But god. Everyone must pay cash. Lol. I was just pickin at the self proclaimed moderator. This was a dead thread until. I read smart *** comments.
While discussing trust , Dana (Pro Built) is the board's go to source on 700R4 info , trustworthy as ol "Honest Abe" , so , pretty darned close to God himself . He stated that type F was used with Asbestos clutches and Mercon with paper .
This naturally begs the question ; if your builder specified type F does that mean he put Asbestos (or some type of Asbestos substitute) clutches in it ?
Since it appears to be the material the clutches are made of that determines which fluid is best for them , wouldn't some piece of mind come from knowing exactly what material the clutches are made from ?

Yes, that is true, from what I have been able to find out over the years. It took a long time (decades) for the oil techs to come up with an oil that is just as good as the Sperm Whale Oil. The people that I know in this industry, use Lube Gard.
