Clanking under heavy acceleration
Clanking under heavy acceleration
Hey guys, I have been experiencing a strange clanking sound (metal hitting metal) when I accelerate in first and second between 3000-5000rpm. It is just a single clank and almost sounds/feels as if the transmission is moving (broken mount?). Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be worried about the state of my mounts or the interior of the transmission?

Either tranny mount or torque arm mount. My guess is torque arm mount because I think the noise would be louder and more violent if the tranny mount let loose. Some have described is as the sound of a bowling ball slamming against the trans tunnel.
Obviously you should check both...

Re: Clanking under heavy acceleration
Put the car up on stands and checked both the torque arm and the transmission mounts. The torque arm mount seemed fine, and the transmission mount looked ok too (Some rubber was cracking on the casing of the mount but the metal inside of the wrapping was fine). Maybe just my exhaust hitting something while accelerating (very quite sound, not a thud but a clank).
Re: Clanking under heavy acceleration
Have you (ever) changed the trans mount? If the answer is no, or not lately, then you need to replace the mount.
They rip in half, one part stays bolted to the trans, the other bolted to the crossmember, gravity will hold the two parts together right up until the shift, then the torque arm pushes the trans into the bottom of the car.
Replace. Your. Trans mount.

My '89 IROC Z was making the sound OP reports. I replaced the broke in two , trans mount and it fixed the problem.

Don't get the Anchor brand. Get one from NAPA, or else go with polyurethane...
