will this 700r4 fit behind my L98?
Hi, I had a question I need to find the answer to. I saw a post on Craigslist for a recently rebuilt 700r4. Its cheap, so I asked him for the numbers. I got 5MK192A, which was last behind a 55 Chevy with an LS swap. I cant find what it was originally out of. He said he ran it in his 1987 el Camino. Any ideas if it would bolt onto my L98 without too much fabrication? I figure I may have to change the tail housing and servo at bare minimum. Thanks for any replies.

1985. Might be truck. And wiring connection should work for a third gen. Not the prom queen as far as 4L60/700R4 units go. But sometimes it's fun to see how much harder the ugly ones will try.

Alpha Number Number format is commonly used on the 700-R4 / 4L60 with the year indicated and the numbers referring to other aspects of the specifications.
Although pressure switches and solenoids were threaded into the valve body with different wiring arrangements in the pan to control torque converter lockup differently for different applications, the ECM to transmission wiring is compatible across a vast number of them, for the purpose of functionality. And virtually anything 85 should be plug and plan for the thiird gen TCC wiring connection.

Thanks for that diagram, I dont know why I didnt just look it up. So based off the diagram its out of an 85 pickup and was built on 1/29/85 first shift. Not sure about how hard it would be to fit in my car though, as in direct replacement or a bunch of fab work needing to be done.

Is it free? Not sure why anyone would want a 700R4 from before they added the auxiliary valve body. Every year of production, GM was fixing problems. Therefore every year you got a slightly better product. Generally speaking higher end cars got the upgrades soonest. So not only do you have a transmission that you have to adapt to fit the application, but it's from a fairly early 700R4 application, and it's from a vehicle that would have gotten the updates the latest. Hard pass.

You'll probably just need one of these: ( F-Body tail-shaft housing for torque arm mount )

For that matter, in the third and fourth gens, going to a crossmember with the torque arm attachment, rather than having it on the tailhousing is a wise move, negating the need for a tailhousing swap.
And while I like the '88-up div. valvebody, plenty of 83-87 vehicles rocked on for tens of thousands of miles.
Negotiate the price? Absolutely. Pass entirely, in a market where the good 'uns are 28+years old and thinned from the market, or causing a much higher acquisition cost?
The possible downsides are getting shift points and firmness that aren't as performance oriented, nor WOT 4th.
Re: will this 700r4 fit behind my L98?
Having owned an 83, and a handful of 86s, I wouldn't want to take the time to put one of those transmissions behind a 350 TPI. Is it possible? Sure. Is it a compromise I'd be satisfied with? Not at all. I certainly wouldn't spend a few hundred dollars on something I'm not going to want a few months later. Not to go backwards. But then I'd rather walk or drive a beater while I save up to do the job right, then cut corners and have to do the job twice.
