3rd to 4th while racing.
i was racing a dodge stealth and at the start of it i took a 3 car lengths lead but after i was going for a while in third the car wouldn't shift into 4th so i let off it shifted and i punched it again and it slipped back into 3rd and the rpms shot up to 6000 so i let off again and it went into 4th and i gradually eased onto the gas and the speed was gradually increasin but i looked down and i was doin 135-39 mph and he was getting ready to pass me so i punched the car again and the bastard went back into 3rd and the rpms shot up again.what is the proper ting to do when the throttle kick down thing keeps kickin down?
Ah yes the querks of owning a 700R4. Theres nothing you can really do, except buy that B&M valve (look in Summit catalog). That valve will help a little, but it still will into third, if ya give it too much gas. Next time I suggest getting the lead on him, then flashin those hazards and ending the race... you WIN.
---the only thing I could suggest is to, punch it, when rpms get too high, let your foot off slowly until you feel it upshift, then leave your foot right where it upshifted. Cuz if you punch it again it will just go back into 3rd. If someone has a better suggestion, please post I would love to hear it also.

that is a really annoying feature to these cars i mean i could see the kick down being in 2nd to 1st to get a good take off but 4th to 3rd is retarded. i wish i had a 5spd. i was also wondering right now my car shifts into the next gear at 5500 rpm but after 4200 the car doesn't have much left i was wondering if i set the car to shift at 4500 would that be better?what should it shift at i have a 350 tpi with a shift kit and a couple mods noting too big at all?

There is a GM kit (don't have the part # right now) that will take care of this problem completely. How do I know that because I have it installed on my 700r4 and my tranny will not downshift to 3rd at WOT. AS a matter of fact I have to downshift it to third when I want to pass another vehicle on the freeway.

...Too bad the feature doesn't have a feature where if you hit the gas pedal HARD in 4th gear it would downshift to 3rd. And if you pushed the pedal rather SOFTLY it would stay in 4th even at WOT.
...BTW have you tested the difference before and after the install of it. What was the difference in top speed? Thanks.

Honestly, I don't have actual mph #'s just rpms(my car speedometer only goes to 85mph) . Before I could never reach 5000 rpms in 4th because of the downshifting to 3rd but now I can if I decide to go that insanely fast again. I estimate based on my gearing that I was doing between 125 and 135 at those rpms. Let me look up the part # and I will post it or someone who has the info could give it before I can.

The Gm part no. for the valve is 8673948. You will probably have to put a heavier spring in the 3-4 shift valve for it to downshift at the right speed so you don't have to manually put the lever in 3rd.

Aight. Nice and to the point. Thanks both of yas, I just figured no matter what gear you're in ya should always downshift when floored. Thread
