Help T5 wont go into gear

Hello, i recently swapped a lb9 for a l98 and before the swap my trans shifted fine, after the swap and an instillation of a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and T/O bearing the trans wont shift into gears with the car running, i double checked the T/O bearing and it was installed correctly, i bled the slave cylinder and it still wont go into gear, the clutch fork travels about an inch. if i shut the car off it shifts into gear fine, i can start it in gear and the wheels spin even though my foot is on the clutch, the flywheel and clutch kit is from perfection clutches. i was starting to wonder if the issues is that the kit came with the wrong T/O bearing, i dont have the old one anymore so i cant match them up, i was hopping someone might have experianced this issue before.

Sounds more like something wrong with the pilot bearing or bushing. Which did you use?

Re: Help T5 wont go into gear

Did it go in smoothly? No damage to it that might have closed up its hole? Any chance the tip of the clutch gear is binding in it?

it went in pretty easily, no damage, How would I check if the clutch gear is binding in it? Also the rod from my slave cylinder doesn?t sit in the fork straight, it comes at a angle slightly and sits in the dimple for it. Is that normal? Or are they supposed to be straight?

Re: Help T5 wont go into gear

Take the drive shaft out of the rear but leave it in the transmission, have your assistant sit in the car and push in the clutch, and try to turn the DS. Might take putting the U-joint caps back on and using a piece of pipe or something. If it's real stiff, try loosening the trans bolts almost all the way, sliding the trans back about three quarters of an inch, and repeat the test. Might have to undo the trans mount somewhat to let it slide rearward. If it then turns easier, it's a pilot problem. If it still doesn't, it's something about the clutch.

Either the clutch isn't releasing, or the pilot is binding on the clutch gear... those are really about the only things that can cause your problem.

ok I?ll give this a try thank you!

Also I assume it has to be in gear?

im getting ready to try what you said sofa and had a quick question regarding a plastic cup that should be at the end of the ball rod coming out of the slave cylinder. If this is missing could it lead to engagement issues.

Re: Help T5 wont go into gear

Shouldn't matter with a new clutch. Might allow the SC to reach the end of its travel and maybe even explode (though probably not) when the clutch wears out.

  1. I just turned the drive shaft in 4th with clutch pedal to the floor it turns smoothly. With foot off the clutch it doesn?t want to move at all
so pilot bushing should be good right?

Re: Help T5 wont go into gear

One would think so. If the clutch lets go well enough that you can turn the whole transmission by hand, you'd think it would also let go enough to let the transmission shift.

Put the DS back together; put it in 5th; start it with the clutch pushed in; hold it in and let it run like that for a few minutes. See if that helps. Maybe it'll wear off any rough edges or whatever.

first of all let me Sincerely say thank you for helping me and giving me all this good advice. I unfortunately had taken the trans out by the time you posted your last response. I removed it to inspect all components and verify I didn?t install anything incorrectly. I have attached photos of all components. I noticed no issues except with the pilot bushing. I noted contact marks with the front of the bushing and the input shaft. this could be from when i installed it. or Is this what happened when a clutch is binding on the pilot bushing? Do I need to installed the bushing deeper or is this normal? The clutch and pressure plate both look good. Because I have it all apart again I?m going to install a new pivot ball and fork. After I install this all again I?ll bleed the cylinder one last time and do as sofa suggested if it won?t go into gear and start it in fifth and keep my foot on the clutch for a few minutes. If none of this works I think I?ll light the car on fire lol. Or I?ll replace the slave cylinder.

Re: Help T5 wont go into gear

I have fixed the issue, clutch fork and pivot ball were worn, also the clutch fork was not positioned correctly on pivot ball, hence why the slave rod sat off to the side.
Thank you sofa helping!
