Need help with a t5!!
Need help with a t5!!
Hey all! I have a 1987 camaro with a 305 abc and a t5 transmission, I can’t get the transmission to shift at all when the engine is on, and the gears grind trying to go into them. I’ve replaced the clutch, the hydraulics, the throw out bearing and the pilot bushing, and I have replaced the transmission with another t5. I am at my wits end with trying to figure it out now and I need help. Anybody?
Re: Need help with a t5!!
I also am 100% certain that the throw out bearing and the clutch disk are installed 100% correct, transmission slipped straight in buttery smooth flush to bell housing.

I recently had the same issue and the problem was the clutch fork not sitting on the pivot ball correctly. Maybe your having a similar issue.
Also try bleeding the slave cylinder

the pivot ball should sit in the dimple on the back of the fork, you might be able to see this without removing the trans if you remove the boot on the clutch fork. You might be able to push the fork into the T/O bearing and it’ll sit in the dimple.

This is a copy/paste from another thread I wrote awhile back; Figured it might help if the T/O bearing isn't on right. ( the tranny WILL still install 'normally' if the T/O bearing isn't mounted the right way.)
Good luck !!
Yes,... The T/O bearing can be re-set on the fork without removing the entire transmission.
I corrected a misplaced TO Bearing without removing the transmission years back It wasn't easy - but I did it. ( That's how I learned there was a right way and a wrong way to installed the dam thing ! ) It was back in 06' but IIRC The trick was to break the fork free from the pivot bolt that's screwed into the bellhousing.

By first removing the lower hydraulics and rubber boot you can get a little window into the clutch. From here you can knock the fork "kinda' off the pivot bolt - but it will not come free enough to 'clear' the pivot bolt at this point. So; get an Allen wrench and remove the pivot bolt as far as possible from the bellhousing. ( I don't think it will come completely out )
Once the pivot bolt is backed out there is JUST enough room to free the fork from it. The TO bearing needs to be adjusted/held ( somehow ) in place so that the fork can be pushed back onto it properly. Once the T/O is on right, re-install all the parts you removed.
If the tranny is COMPLETELY installed already - try it. At this point you've got nothing to loose !

Okay I’ve got an update for everyone, I checked the pivot ball, it’s in the dimple so all is good there, I also just replaced the clutch hydraulics and bled it properly, with the car up on jack stands I can get into 1st 2nd and 3rd, I can’t get into 4th 5th and reverse, I just dropped the car down and put it on the pavement, now I can’t shift into anything, and when I try to start the car in gear it lurches forward hard and won’t start. I’m thinking of buying a new pressure plate maybe? I also checked the throw out bearing it is installed on the fork correctly. I also measure the slave cylinders travel amount, I’m within spec there aswell I wonder if it’s my pressure plate?

I'm not tranny gu-ru,......... my bet is on the tranny itself.
Can't see any reason it would go into 1-2-3, but not 4-5 unless something in the tranny is causing it. ( you said on jack-stands,.... I ASSUME it wasn't running. )
Again - that's my GUESS.

Guess who’s stupid? I’m stupid. I thought I put a new flywheel and pressure plate in. But I didn’t. I put the old ones in, I’m gonna pull it all out on Thursday and throw the new ones in I’m willing to bet it’s one of those two causing this issue, regardless I’m still replacing both because I’ve got them. I’ll update everyone after I do!
