T-56 Aluminum flywheel and clutch opinions

Looking for a new clutch and flywheel advice .Currently I’m running the Mcloud 500 series disc with the LT-4 pressure plate . It works well and have tryed other more aggressive discs and didn’t like them . I have the centerforce 2 piece RMS flywheel and it’s just so heavy. Want to know if you think an aluminum one will help the car accelerate. Over the years I have just added more weight to the drivetrain . I remember back with one of my 383’s how fast the car went though the gears with a T-5 and 10 bolt rear . Car currently has a 383 that makes 456HP@6000 RPM and 478TQ @ 4500 RPM measured at the crank .
Cars drivetrain is like this
Centerforce 2 piece flywheel 32 LBS
Rockland standard gear Tranzilla T-56
Spohn toogun driveshaft
Moser 12 bolt with 411’s
Eaton LSD with 32 spline axles
. I use the car for fun and gets pounded on whenever I take it out . Cars suspension is set upfor open track days and have done many . It runs 13.0 @ 113 in the 1/4 mile with horrible 60 foot times . Thanks please let me know if there’s anything new on the market and opinions welcome thank you

Aluminum flywheels are only good for when the car is already moving. From a stop it requires more slippage, or more RPM to get going. They aren't really street friendly and it's the opposite of what you want for drag racing.

I have a friend that had a Tilton 7" triple disc clutch. Throttle response was AMAZING. Driving with it kind of sucked. I followed him one day and he was constantly working the throttle when upshifting and downshifting, and squealing tires trying to get moving. It was just plain silly in a street car.

He eventually went to an RPS carbon fiber dual-disc clutch and loves it. Spendy little sucker though. But talk about butter smooth engagement....

I know what you mean about the CF flywheel. All that weight makes the engine feel TOTALLY different. Makes it feel "sluggish", because the rate of change in RPMs gets slowed down so much. I went from the 16 lb stock L69 one to the CF and noticed the same thing.

Fidanza used to make one I think, no idea if they still do. Don't recall the weight.

With that large of a motor and that gear, "leaving" on the street should present no problems at all with any flywheel it would be possible to bolt a stock T-56 clutch to.

Yes I have used stock style T-56 clutches up to this point, the Mcloud 500 has pucks on the FW side and your typical organic stuff on the PP side . Holds well and drives well . In the past I used RAM discs with pucks on both sides and I believe a Kevlar SPEC that chattered. Both of them held , but they were either on or off , really had to work then for normal driving from a stop .
The car has a decent size cam in it with a rough idle COMP 292H . A T-5 FW is like 22lbs and the RAM FW I’m looking at is 16lbs , that’s half the weight of centerforce FW . I’m ok with just putting another 500 series disc in it . Anyone out there have anything similar to this set up . I don’t want to make a costly mistake. I don’t really care about my 1/4 mile time , I don’t really do it anymore thanks

Re: T-56 Aluminum flywheel and clutch opinions

Aluminum flywheels really only help road race driving. When it's 95% street and 5% 1/4 mile, it doesn't help anything, really. Moving a 3,300lb vehicle "slows you down." Spinning a whole 32lbs doesn't. But having a flywheel that's too light will make your launch rather tricky. A heavier one will improve consistency.

If you're deadset on lighter, call Centerforce and tell them. Their standard offerings aren't all they can do, but you gotta get off the summit web page and put some talk time into things to get what you want sometimes.

The best "aggressive, stout, reliable, smooth" clutch I drove was done by a brake/ clutch relining shop. Standard 3rd gen 10.5" clutch, metallic disc. It wore down the pressure plate and flywheel over time, but it took abuse from a 400sbc without issue. Going with off-the shelf offerings is okay. But it's not all that's out there.

Re: T-56 Aluminum flywheel and clutch opinions

Well I got the itch to move on with it and ordered the RAM 2555 . It’s impossible to make these cars do everything well . The car is set up for track days , and I occasionally put around town it in . I really have no idea what I’m doing with it these days, been laid up since my last track day in 2016 . I’ll post back for future reference . If anyone is interested of a poorly filmed , in car video of it at a track day google LimeRock Iroc 9/26/16 . Thanks for the help
