200r4 transmission swap

I currently don't have a 3rd gen Firebird Formula but plan to get one at some point, probably the Formula 350. Looking at the gear ratios for the 700R4, that 3.06 first gear is a bit too low for me. I like the ratios of the transmissions that came in the Buick Grand Nationals, the 200R4. Has anyone made this swap. If not is there any reason to believe it wouldn't fit right and would take a lot of labor to make it fit?

Re: 200r4 transmission swap

A driveshaft for a an '82 with TH200-C works.
Shifter cable and bracket for 700-R4 third-gen works.
Cooler lines, TCC wiring, and TV cable bolt up.
You'll need a crossmember that puts the mount in the right place and a torque arm setup that bolts to the crossmember.
It's not a tough swap.

Re: 200r4 transmission swap

thanks for the info. I'm in the beginning of trying to figure out what kind of mods I'll be doing. I do know I'll put headers and an overall better flowing exhaust system and updating spark plugs, plug wires just to make sure there isn't something that over time would be a problem or rob power. I'd like to keep the factory intake but wouldn't be opposed to having it ported. I'd like some head work or different heads and a bigger cam (streetable but hoping for a 75 to 100 RWHP) increase over factory power.

Re: 200r4 transmission swap

The '89 TTA (turbo trans am) used the 200-4R transmission. May have some luck using it in search terms for some of the swap items.

The THM200-4R can both fit and perform nicely in a 3rd Gen.

I build a good number of these (not as many as I used to though), and THM700-R4 transmissions for people who want a 4-speed overdrive without any need for electronics.
I have a significant amount of both the THM200-4R and THM700-R4 transmissions behind 1,000+ HP engines, that are doing very well!

If you decide on a THM200-4R in the future, there is a business in the DFW area of TX that specializes in these transmissions (as well as THM400 and 4L80E units).
Look up: Jake's Performance Transmissions.

If you decide on a THM700-R4 or a 4L60E, Look up: Pro-Built Automatics and ask for Dana.
